I dont know why, but i must have a very clean bike and stripped down to the bare essentials. I clean it after every ride. I've been doing this since I had my 1st Honda 50 back in 68. Can't change now. I did find this on the interwebs.
I can relate.

It could be a combination of factors that makes you feel your motorcycle needs to be clean and stripped down to the bare essentials, including: a strong sense of mechanical appreciation, a desire for optimal performance, aesthetic satisfaction, a need for control, or even a form of obsessive-compulsive behavior where maintaining a pristine bike provides a sense of order and peace of mind.

Here are a few possible reasons why someone might feel this way about their motorcycle:
Pride in ownership:

Rub on a bike too much and you’ll get paint swirls and/or a scratched windshield. I wash mine thoroughly when it’s dirty. Only things I wipe down between washes are the wheels. I’ll also use Plexus on the windshield to remove bugs.

Plexus is good stuff; I keep a can at home and 1 on the bike. And you are right about wiping down causing swirls in the paint. Hot soapy water and a sponge or soft brush and then a real leather shamy. A towel soaked in hot soapy water and laid on the fairing for 5 minutes or so will soften up the bugs so that they will rinse right off. A California duster is a great tool for in between washes to get the dust off, the dirtier it looks the better it works. Dirt, bugs and even some chips in the paint are a result of using it for what it is for, if you ride it, it's going to happen!

I like Plexus too, but it's just gotten so damn expensive. For bugs, I'm a big fan of a small spray bottle with half water and half hydrogen peroxide. Spray that on windshield and on front, bug coated body parts. Let it sit for a few seconds then watch the bug guts slowly dissolve and wipe off with a micro fiber towel. It does a great job. I will also usually carry my Plexus alternative, Lemon Pledge. After a session of water/hydrogen peroxide, I will give everything a quick blast of Lemon Pledge and wipe that down with a micro fiber towel as well.
