Motor Trike Driveshaft

Pull off the right side cover where the oil dipstick and the master cylinder is for the rear brakes.
If the front of the driveshaft is Blue.
Its the old style.
If its Green.
Its the newer one.

Roger I don't think the new generation driveshaft will fit your GL1500 conversion. You might give MotorTrike a call to confirm that but I'm pretty sure it is for GL1800s only. Let us know what you find out. That would be nice to know....

Well, its been a while since I got on the board so happy new year to all of you. Now, to the down side I came across the thread on the MT drive shafts, went out and looked and of course mine had to be blue:gah:

My question to you guys is what's the problem with the old driveshaft "the blue ones?

If you have one of the drive shafts with the grease fitting in the front as well as rear U Joint and don't have any vibration issue right now I suspect you'd find any immediate advantage to having the new style. Those of us that have experienced vibration problems most likely will see improvement at least. Not saying it's a silver bullet to cure all ills but as least in my case there was noticeable improvement.

With mine the front U-joint self destructed.
It lost some of the pin bearings.
Mine was very noisy between giving it gas and letting up on the throttle.
You could hear and feel it slapping around.
As a 2nd owner.
I thought it was normal........till one day shifting from 4th to 5th at about 3500 rpm I heard metal to metal slapping around down there.
Plus a lot of vibration afterwards and in the mirrors constantly.
The new driveshaft is a little beefier and has grease fittings front and rear.

Longer story short if you do get or can use the new driveshaft with the 1500.
Expect around a $225 labor charge.
If its out of warranty.

Having gone through a front ujoint failure last summer, I was interested in this post. I contacted MT and asked them about a possible upgrade. Since the trike is still under warantee, they sent me a replacement upgrade to the green version.

The install went well except for the keeper bar/ring replacement. I left the original bar in place but had a great deal of problems getting proper clearance all around, so I replaced the existing bar with the new one and things fit together well. Took the trike for a ride yesterday and felt a significant improvement in the vibration.

Also note that with the new shaft, both grease fittings are accessible without having to remove the drive shaft.
My sincere thanks to Motortrike and their excellent customer service. They did good by me.

How can I determine if I have the new type or old type driveshaft on goldwing with motor trike

If your trike is a SOLID AXLE conversion, it will have neither. On the S/A conversions MotorTrike did on the 1500's, they use the OEM front universal joint assembly that was in the bike as a 2 wheeler (OEM Honda part). That joint, from Honda is a sealed non serviceable joint.

Additionally, the S/A GL1800 conversions used the same OEM Honda GL1500 front u-joint assembly as well. (there were a few made that used a modified GL1800 shaft, but that was only for a year or two as I understand it).

Hope that helps with some of the questions.

I have an 06 1800 with a Motor Trike solid axle. Cruising down the highway at 65 MPH all hell broke loose. Long story short the fwd universal self destructed, It was the old style universal. There was no indication prior and there was 45k on the unit. I suggest all Motor Trike owners replace any old style units. It might stop you from having to replace your frame. Go ahead, ask me how I know.

Same happened to me.
But no frame damages.
Whole long thread about it here towards the bottom of the page.
Another long post on page 2 back in Sept when things 1st went bang..
MT replaced mine with the newer driveshaft and all is well now.
I did however have to pay for the install labor.
2nd time around out of warranty.
