My cousin did a mod that made his GW sound much better with no droning effect to mount to anything. He came up today to show me how easy it is, and boy is it easy.
stock muffler before cutting with end cap off

After cutting

What was cut off

you want to cut it at the round seam leaving the 3 threaded mounting threads so you can reinstall the end cap.
Sound is subjective. It has a much deeper sound with around 5% more volume, guessing here. I have no droning effect at all. At speed it is slightly louder, you can really hear th enew sound at low speeds. Performance, too early to say but I don't feel ,uch of a change if any at all.
It is just about perfect for me. Just enough sound to make it sound good. No interference with the sound of my tunes.

Took around 40 minutes to do total. On a trike the mufflers come off really easy and makes the cutting very easy using a port=a-band saw.

After doing 2 trikes mufflers. Mine with the factory end caps and the other with turn down tips with no restrictions like the factory end caps have.
We took a ride, we both agreed that the turn downs are just too loud, droning effect. Mine with the factory restrictive end caps is almost too much, but bearable but this is subjective.
I am going to weld the end back on my buddy's bike and start with (2) 1/2 inch holes first to see if is what he wants, if more is needed I will add a third hole.
I will post the results.

Here is a updat:
We did them again. At certain rpm's the sound had a droning effect that was unpleasant.

What we did was, on his with open end caps I welded the end back on and tac welded them back on in several spots and left some slight slots on the side. Much better. Has a good low end rumble and tone but no droning effect now.
On mine I made new ends and tac welded them on but made a larger hole where the pipe comes out. Mine has closed end caps and some slots around it. I like this, just about right now. No droning effect.
If I was to do it again I would put 2 3/8 inch holes in the end plate behind the end cap. If not enough I would enlarge them to a 1/2 inch. They are not really loud, they just have a droning effect at certain rpm's. Putting the ends back on made a big difference in the droning effect. I will be taking some short trips later on and I can tell more.
we both like them better now.

Or you could just go to the local muffler shop and have straight pipes installed. Then if you don't like it just pull them and put the mufflers back on. If have had straight pipes for about 3 years. Sound fine. If I do get behind my neighbor on the freeway you do get a resonance.
