The trike is at HD getting a new complementary exhaust system so I took the 2-wheeled '04 Electra Glide for a 900 mile business trip. Coming back as I crossed over into NYC I though the bike was feeling weird as I got on the Cross Bronx Expressway (as nasty as it sounds). Clunking sounds and engine slipping. I was thinking something in clutch. Then I hit traffic. Took a shortcut around it and stopped at a gas station to take a peek inside primary cover. All looked good. Decided to just baby it last 60 miles home. Get off my exit on LI Expressway and stop for light. That was it.

Barely made it into gas station 6 miles from home.

Further inspection and I realized primary wasn't grabbing. Called AMA tow service and they got me home. Took a look in manual. I did not know this bike had a compensator sprocket also. I thought that was something new to TG's. That is my best geuss what is wrong.BTW, the Compensators only last 25k on TG. My '04 has 112k on it.

At least I stayed a couple hours ahead of rain.:Crap::qpnmt:
 
My experience is on Shovel, Evo and Twin Cam motors, but all had compensator sprockets. Your symptoms sound like a failed compensator sprocket, which isn't too tough to replace.

As a side note, I've never known a compensator sprocket to fail: the only one that looked rough was on my brother-in-law's old shovel. We tore the motor apart in 1989, and noted that some of the teeth had wear on them. That old shovel was a far cry from your '04 Twin Cam.

I'd pop the primary open and check the clutch plates before messing with compensator, doesn't cost much more than your time. If the steels show sign of heat you've found the culprit, if not move on to see if the compensator bolt has loosened up on you.
 
Actually, I got it completely wrong. It was actually the teeth from clutch hub center that fell apart. Now that I have seen old style compensator, it looks bullet proof. The shaft out of tranny is actually good. Clutch in good shape also. Also tore up secondary belt pretty good. 10 teeth left by time I got home.

And for icing on cake....There was a big nail in rear tire.

Of course the wife said I should have sold it when I got the trike. Thanks dear.:censored:

Now if only HD would get the new exhaust system installed, I will be all set to ride something. Its being replaced under warranty. $1000 worth of parts.

I guess that will go straight to the bike.

Ouch, thats going to leave a mark on the ol check book. Your right the old style compensator is pretty much bullet proof.
