Miles Between Oil Change

I just bought a 2005 Goldwing 1800 trike can any of you guys tell me how many mikes you put on your trke between oil change? I really wont to take care of her.

Honda says 8,000 between oil changes. Doing the trike conversion probably does not alter that any. I don't know anyone that goes that far using conventional oil. I uses AMSOIL 100% synthetic oil and change every 10,000. Have been doing that now for 12 years (two GL1800s) and never had any issues. Rotella T 15/40, dino, white jug at WalMart. Every 5K miles does not cost an arm and a leg. Gonna get a lot of opinions on this one.

Dirty oil is dirty oil, no matter if its 100% mineral oil, semi-synthetic or full synthetic.<br />

Both of my Harley's get fresh, full-synthetic oil and a filter @ 5,000 miles, per the H-D repair manuals. I ride them both year-round.<br />

My V-star is my wife's bike, and she doesn't ride in the cool weather (I'm up about the Mason-Dixon line.) In late October, the LAST THING I DO is change the oil and filter (<i>no matter what the mileage is</i>) fill the gas tank and add gas stabilizer, then drive 22 miles to the storage garage, where it sits under cover until early April the following year.<br />

The typical annual mileage on the V-star is 3~4K. If it ever exceeded 5K miles, I'd change it then, and not wait until October.

I use Amsoil, but the GW is much too expensive to try to save a few bucks on oil. I plan to change it every 4000 miles, unless I'm on a long trip, then I'll just wait till I get home.

I only put on about 4-5K a year. So I only do 1 oil change a year in the fall so its ready to go in the spring. I guess I am the odd man out but I go and patronize the local Honda dealer and pick up the Honda Oil and Filter from him when I am there.

If you're changing semi synthetic oil at 4K miles, you should think about saving some $ and use Dino oil.

2010 Wing calls out every 12K miles I change about every 6K miles and use Mobil One , I am sure This is not needed , but it gives me something to play with. Funny the book also calls to change the spark plugs at almost the same intervals 16K miles this also seems like over kill.

best you can do is to change your oil filter half was between oil chg. hrs. & most important is to keep your AIR filter clean. enging wear is directly proportional to the amount of dust ingested into the eng. so if you go thru a-lot of dust of live /ride in a dusty area. clean the air filter.

I'll change Amsoil every 10-12,000 miles, but I change oil filters and add a quart every 4-6000 miles. If the oil is dirty, that's just fine. The idea idea is to get the dirt and crap out of the oil, which the filter does. I have been running Amsoil products in my vehicles from Peterbilt tractor/trailers, all my pov's since 1985. I've sold the product and have sent in numerous oil samples for analysis over the years and have been told every time I change my oil, that there was no need to because the oil's lubricating and cleaning properties were just fine. Even tho the oil looked black. That tells you that your oil is doing it's cleaning job, and there is nothing to worry about. But I feel better that way. If you run synthetic, there is no need to change your oil all the time, just your filter. You can always go to your parts store or any truck stop and pick up an oil analysis kit yourself, send it in, and find out for yourself.

Always preferred the way the Semi-Synthetic shifts and clutches, and not "that" expensive. I still view the 4000 mile changes as "cheap insurance"..... ThumbUp

</div>Not really, but as a preferred customer I pay less for Amsoil than I would for Honda oil at my dealer. I could go to Walmart and save some money, but I've used Amsoil for years. And, if I'm on a long trip I know I have excellent oil in my engine.

I change the oil and filter every 4,000 miles with Rotella T-6 and a Honda oil filter.
I also change it before and after a long trip.
To me, it's cheap insurance

Catfish, looks like you have an Amsoil dealer close to you Amsoil Dealer - Russellville, AR
Check out buying oil by the 2 1/2 gallon jugs if possible. I buy my oil like that or I use to buy it when I was still driving my Pete by the 55 gallon drum. Buying it by the quarts is expensive. You can always go to the main Web site at AMSOIL - Synthetic Oil, Motor and Engine Oil, Lubricants, Air Filters, Oil Filters and Greases and search their site for more info.
Your Amsoil dealer will be able to fill you in on more details about the recommended oil change intervals and etc. You can get better prices also if you are an Amsoil preferred customer But it has been said before, any oil is good as long as you change it often.

Being in the auto business I have learned over the years...any engine runs better and longer on clean oil. I change mine every 4,000 miles and at least once a year on my 2003

I think I agree with The Captain on this one. Anyone that reads the material sent out by Amsoil will know if you're changing after 4k miles you are throwing your money away. Why pay extra and then throw it away before it has finished it's job. Even using dino oil your GW is going to last in excess of 200k miles. To me it is a no brainer. Use a good dino oil every 5k and save that money to spend on the babe sitting behind you!

Not recommend to change oil in the Fall. Oil sitting all winter picks up moisture / from condensation. Also synthetic oil does not suspend dirt it settles out. JMHO.

So glad tosee this thread. I pick up my Goldwing this Fri.and the person I am purchasing from said it was changed by previous owner and not since, though she hasn't put over 1000 miles on it since. (about 1 1/2 yrs).
she is selling because of health issues.
I still may want to change oil when I get it home and have it registered.
I want this trike to last a long time.

Guess I am a nut about maintenance. I change my oil and filter on my 2012 Wing every 3000 miles or 3 months, which ever comes first. I use Honda oil and filter that I get from Wingstuff. Never have any oil related problems. Heck, with a wing I don't have any problems.

I change every six or seven thousand miles or so.

Or sooner if the tranny "clunks" when I shift.
