The following are ways commonly used to remove melted shoe sole, etc from your pipes.

1) EZ Off Oven Cleaner- Warm the pipes up a bit and apply oven cleaner to affected area being careful not to get ANY over spray on paint or engine case. Better yet, buy the brush-on kind or if you cant find it, spray it into a jar lid then brush it onto the affected area. Let it sit a few min and wipe it off, then clean area with chrome cleaner.

2) WD-40 works great on most melted goop and doesn't hurt other areas.

3) A penny. Yes just use a plain old penny to scrape off melted stuff. Its harder than the burnt rubber, but softer than the metal pipe and wont scratch it. Sounds weird, but some folks swear by it.

4) Use 0000 steal wool and brake cleaner - then use mothers polish to bring back the shine. Quick and works great.

Or you can make it real easy by going to an ACE hardware and pick up a tube of MAAS. Used by the AirForce and many other clients in the know. Best thing I have ever used on chrome or paint.
