Lehman Trike Kit Question ?

I'm looking at a 02 Goldwing Trike with a Lehman Kit on it.
If you have one or ever had one could you tell me the Pros and Cons on that Kit before I make a decision on it ?
Thanks
Gary

As far as I know, Lehman kits are single axle as opposed to independent suspension. Some people say that's not a problem while others say it is. The only kit I've ever driven is my Roadsmith. If you're planning on riding solo, you may never notice the difference.

I own a Roadsmith but have worked on many brands: My first trike kit years ago was a Lehman SolidAxle built by myself on a Harley Iron Head Sportster. The only problems back then can still be some of the same, our kit back then had no rake kit installed so it drove a little hard and twitchey until I added a steering stabilizer which helped some. Now they make Solid Axle and IRS ( Independent Suspension) which is now the industry normal. Try to find the best installer for which ever brand you end up choosing because that can make or break your kit... and get the one closest to you if available. Check out each manufacturers website and print out their Price Sheet and options that you want from each brand, they are all different - then go ride so test rides on your top two or three choices...

Every trikers choice is different for different reasons... but make sure you choose the one you like for you and your spouse if riding two up... always keep the passenger in the loop unless you want to be riding by yourself.... And don't rush your choice, make it count it's a big investment!!!

We liked Roadsmith as it had everything we wanted and even some things that we didn't want.... Enjoy the shopping and welcome to Trike World...

I am not too familiar with your neck of the woods but I would suggest reaching out to some current triketalk members and asking if you can perhaps take a test ride on their GL1800 conversion; especially if you have not ridden a trike and have little frame of reference. Not all solid axle conversions ride the same way so try a different conversion so you have some ability to determine if the one you want to get is better or worse, etc. You are probably on a limited budget if you are looking at an 02 so go hang out and do some research at the Goldwing forums and check on frame cracking. They had issues with 01, 02 and earlier 03s as I understand it where the frames cracked up under near the passenger left floorboard area.

There are still pictures posted showing these cracks and I know a trike likely stresses that area so check an 02 for frame cracking. Honda wasn't very open about it but did replace a lot of frames even through they wouldn't issue a recall. Oh yeah, one other note... make sure it has a rake kit installed; if it doesn't it will be a pain to steer and will feel twitchy. Bazooka had some good info on this in a recent thread`noting all you have to do is check triple tree color. Unfortunately, I can't remember if silver of black means a rake kit.

I have an 04 Lehman Monarch I. If the one you're looking at has rear drum brakes, and the body trunk hatch opens down, you're looking at a Monarch I.

It has a noticeably harder ride on rough roads than a Monarch II, but it isn't bad as long as you set the suspension preload and rear tire pressure correctly. Mechanically it's pretty simple and seems robust. Some parts can be a challenge to find since it's a discontinued model, but there is a wealth of information and sources on this forum.

Wow all great Info !!!
Yes I'm on a budget and don't like to make a mistake on what I get.
I'm thinking about maybe getting a newer one now around a 08 with independent suspension like a Roadsmith.
Please keep all the Info coming.
Thanks

How far are you willing to go to buy/fetch or ship?

We have 2 trikes:
2008 GL 1800 with Lehman Monarch II kit - solid axle
2008 GL 1800 with MotorTrike Adventure kit - independent suspension

We are both drivers so no one rides on the back seat except maybe an extra bag on long distance overnight rides.

We honestly cannot tell a difference between the 2.
They both handle well and are very comfortable to ride.
We love them both.

Maybe the difference is in the backseat ride?

Lehman out of business ???

Lehman is not out of business as of yesterday.... Champion has moved all of the Lehman inventory from Spearfish, SD to California this week.
