My mechanic (very dependable and competent) told me I should take the heel toe shifter off my 08 GW Motortrike because it is hard on the transmission and Honda has been known to reject warranty claims on bikes that have them. Other opinions on this would be appreciated.<br />

I've read this in forums on more than one occasion. I don't know how the heal toe shifter could be hard on the transmission, I could be just as rough on my up and down shifts without it. One of the 1st things I installed on my 2012 GL1800 is the Kury heal toe shifter, I ordered it from the dealer I bought the bike from and they were just fine with it.

I also have a heel/toe shifter and have had the trike in for service a couple of times. On the last visit, my service manager adjusted it for me and she now shifts extremely smooth. It was good before, but now it's seems more 'fluid'. He never mentioned any issues regarding Honda not approving this accessory. Just an FYI.

What is hard on the transmission is if the shifter is heavy either up with the rear foot peg end or down with the front foot peg end, it keeps pressure on the shifting fork thus causing a transmission problem. Keeping your foot on the shifter will also put pressure on the shifting fork. I have a add-on heel-toe shifter and had to add weights to the rear of the bar because it was front heavy. Bottom line is that the shifter bar should be balanced or at least mostly balanced.

I believe this is what my dealer accomplished when he adjusted mine making sure the pivot point for the HT shifter moved freely and was balanced properly.
