I tried to get gas

I went for a ride today. I needed gas and pulled into a station to fill up. The pump gave me the option of paying with a credit card or paying inside. I picked inside, lifted the handle and waited. The display said waiting for authorization. I waited and waited, then said to hell with it and hit cancel. There were several cars parked with shoppers inside. I figured the girl was busy handling them and it was taking her time to reset the pump. My next attempt was to use a credit card. Again I waited and waited. Canceled that and went inside. I said what do I need to do to get gas on that pump? The girl said "we have had bad experiences with motorcyclists, so we make them pre-pay". I told her that now a motorcyclist has had a bad experience with you. I left and rode directly across the street to another station and filled up no problem. In 50 years of riding this is only the second time I have ever had a problem getting a station to sell me gas. Has anyone else ever had a experience like this where they treated you differently from a car driver?

Around here,if you choose the "Pay Inside" option, the attendants will not turn on the pump until you pay, first.
Since the above is a pain in the butt,I always use a credit card.

Heck, that's profiling.

You have a point that I never considered. At the time I was simply mad about it and never gave a thought as to why they do it. I don't know if some bikes left without paying or what, but it definitely rubbed me the wrong way. I'm pretty easy going but at the time I was pretty mad about it. When I went across the street it was business as usual with no issues just like it is at every other station I stop at. This wasn't some small out of the way off brand station. It was a BP station with about 8 or 10 pumps. On this day, Marathon got my business. All 8 dollars and change of it.

I would go ape shit on them if it happened to me. No wait a minute, my wife would as I attempted to calm her down with no luck. I always use credit and will continue doing to avoid my wildcat from ripping them to shreds.

I would get the manager and punch em right in the frigging nose!!!!!

That is total BS!!!!!!!!!!!

And if you you pulled up on a bike.. When you punch em right in the frigging nose...
You would have proven their reasons....For thinking that way...
They don't have to like you , And likewise you don't have to give them your business!

Really? You would punch em in the nose? What do you suppose would happen after that? Do you think for a minute the manager with the broken nose would just say to himself "well I had it coming" and do nothing? I'd imagine a call to the police would follow and then where would you be? Try a little self control before your knee jerk reactions get you locked up.

Kinda reminds me of some people associating every bike they saw as a Hells Angles member back in the 70's.

I have always paid with a "gas" credit card since 1969. On two occasions, I have only paid cash. Just returned from a 2,195 mile trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico! Never had a problem.

Heck, that's profiling.

Profiling itself is not so bad. Profiling is just another way of saying discriminating. We all discriminate based on something. Back in the day if you had a daughter who had a new boy coming over to take her to the movies and he showed up in a heavily customized van ..... you would have profiled and discriminated soon enough.

:D

Most gas stations that say "pay inside" always want money in advance. At least as far as my travels have shown me. I usually use credit card, which is taking your info ahead of time. Never had a problem of someone not wanting to give me gas then. Did have a problem with my credit card getting stuck in machine. I told them if they didn't get it out, then i would take it apart myself (i have the tools to do it, too).

+1 on that! That'd be my wife, too!

Around here in the Chicago area it doesn't matter if you "pay at the pump" with a card or pay inside, you have to pay first. They won't turn the pump on for a car or a bike without your money first. Its not about profiling, it's about corporate making sure they get their money.

Irritating experience for sure.

I have not seen the pump being turned on when I select "pay inside" whether in car or on trike...Reason is so many people drive off after filling up and cheating the station operator.

I generally remember this when I feel put upon for any reason: From "Alice in Wonderland." Alice says: "Oh, I shall never get over it." The good witch replies, "Oh, but you will if you don't make a memorandum of it."
