I just purchased an Android tablet mainly to check weather radar on long trips and have a question When going in to a McDonalds or Starbucks etc. what do you need to do to access the web? Do you ask the counter person for a code or number?

I don't have a smart phone (mine's really dumb - can't even text - which I wouldn't do anyway) so I don't have access to weather radar.

At some places they will have the code on the chalkboard, AT mickey d's you'll either have to ask or it will be on your receipt... Starbucks... They post it or you can ask! Your Mileage may vary state to state!

I'll be in Glen Ellyn next week end... I grew up there.. But I won't have a trike with me or I'd buy your a cup of joe!

Memnoch451, thanks for the heads up and the coffee offer, but I'll be in Washington DC for Rolling Thunder next week end.

Where abouts in Glen Ellyn?

Sold off all my "i" stuff a while ago in favor of a Samsung 7" tablet, and a Samsung Galaxy II phone. Out here the wifi in Mc D's is usually free and not passworded. If you are not set on 'auto detect' you may have to hit 'settings' then 'wireless networks' and select the McD's wifi. I use AT&T as a provider, and they supply McD's with a reduced cost. Starbucks is the same. Also most cell phone stores do the same.

When I had the iPhone, I jailbroke it, allowing access to applications not authorized by Apple. One allowed me to 'tether' my pad or laptop to the phone and use the 4G signal on my laptop.

With the Android platform, they don't call it jailbreaking, it is "rooting", does about the same thing (called moble hot spots now). Google up rooting, there are specific procedures depending on the generation software you are using.

Good Luck

I bought an Andriod phone so I could do the same thing you are doing. I don't even have a phone number assigned to it but have considered getting Verizon Prepaid use on it. Most motels have Wifi and I have connected at McDonalds. I use AT&T at home so I can connect through AT&T at McDonalds but I don't think that is necessary. I found a couple Apps that are very useful. I use Raindar for weather. I also found MapDroyd for road maps and GPS help. I use a GPS on the trike but wanted something to find other roads without carring roadmaps. Mapdroyd works off-line on my phone and so does GPS. It isn't as good as Microsoft Streets and Trips but it's useful and a lot better than nothing. With Raindar you can change the map type (street or geographical) and direction of travel for the storms in settings. You do have to download maps for Mapdroyd but the are free also. Everything I use is free.

No pass word at DD or Mickie Ds , or even Lowes. I Also got on at Panera Bread.
Don't care for the iPad . I am on it now , no Flash Player. A lot of Web pages require it. I am a Wed Master and I can't edit my Web site with this. You can't put pictures on a face book or a forum

John, is the Android OS any better for i'net use?

ipads seem to be everywhere, but I didn't know they don't do flash. I'm still using/traveling with my 13" macBook, but smaller would be better.

Flash player and lower price is the reasons I went with an android tablet instead of Ipad. Ipads waaaay over priced - in my opinion.
I'm very computer challenged so I wanted something cheap in case all this is too confusing - which, so far is pretty proving to be. At least I won't be out much $$$$ if I decide to toss it.
It'll probably be cheaper to ask the gas station attendant if any rain is coming to the area. LOL

Nextbook 8" with "icecream sandwich" for $199 on HSN + $200 in apps.

I grew up near main and North Ave. I went to Glenbard west. One of my best friends owns the Italian restaurant in down town GE ( vitorious Cafe' ) Try it you'll love it!

I live off Main street and what use to be called 5 cornres. Now just a normal intersection. They blocked St Charles from going through. There's a big Menards at North and Main now.
