It's a 2003 Softail Springer. To good a deal to pass on. All I'm going to do to it is change out the Buckhorn bars. It rides and runs great. I'm likin' it.

I still have my 01 FX springer. Wish I had kept one of my FL Springer's.
Was thinking a Freewheeler would look real good with a springer front end.

I've tried buckhorns before. I had them on my Sportster trike for quite a while. They just have my wrists at a bad angle for me. I guess I lied about one thing. I have decided to go to S and S 510 gear drive cams and do away with the chain tensioners.

Sportser engines don't use cam chain tensioners, they are gear drive cams.



The 1999-06 Twin cam is the only one which has tensioner issues. The 07 and later tensioners are for the most part trouble free. They do need inspected since they are a wear item, the new style hydraulic tensioners are much better than the old style. I wouldn't run gear drive on an 07 and later twin cam without addressing the weak crankshaft 1st. The 07 and later cranks are more prone to shift, gear drive has a max run out specification of .003, the 2010 Triglide I used to own came from Harley Davidson with .005 run out. If the crank on a gear drive equipped twin cam shifts the end result is the picture below.

Sorry I lost track, the S&S 510 will be a little soft on the bottom end with an 88" engine toting a trike unless you bump the compression.

Your going to go from a cam with a 34 degree intake close to a cam with a 38 degree intake close, this will take your CCP from about 162 psi to about 158 psi. Bleeding off more cylinder pressure will shift the torque curve to the right. Most people who have chosen the S&S 510 also do a 95" bore which gives you a CCP right around 170 psi with the 510 cam.

There are better cams for basically a stock 88" engine, either the Andrews 21 or 26 would fill the bill. They both can be had in gear drive, the 21 would be a nice cam to perk up the bottom end.

Okay. And now for a maybe stupid question. I have a barely used set of Screaming Eagle mufflers that where on my '95 Sportster. Is there any way these could be used on the 2003 Softail?

I had alway like the way the Harley's springer looked. My 1947 Knuck, 1958 Pan and 2004 Softail all have Harley's springer. Cleaning them is another story. Best of luck with your Springer Trike. It is a cool look trike.
