Hitch mounted rack

We have been thinking about a trailer but a few issues come up for us.

One is that here in CA you are limited to the slow lanes on the freeway & max 55mph with a trailer.

We're not sure we want to spend all that money on something we will only use a few times a year.

And I am not really sure I want to be dragging a trailer around all the time and if we leave the hotel and decide not to take it for the day - we would have to leave it there unattended.

I have seen a number of these hitch mounted racks (like the one below) and I'm thinking that just what we need. Are these a good way to go considering my concerns ?

Any comments on what type you have, how you load it and how you like it ?

I had one custom made for my Shadow Trike but that's another story.

You can get one already made from several sources. J&P Cycles (Motorcycle Parts & Accessories | J&P Cycles) has them in their Cruiser catalog (page 298) as well as the hitch adapters that keep the rack from swaying from left to right and back on the hitch.

I loaded mine with about 25 pounds of gear (including small ice chest) and used bungie cords to secure everything. I did take the precaution of using my kayaking dry bags to stow the gear in just in case it rained on the trip up through Maggie Valley and into the Gatlinburg area. Once we got to the hotel we just unloaded everything and took it up to the room - including the hitch rack.

I now have a little cargo trailer and I don't mind leaving it at a hotel or motel. But I do carry a heavy duty cable and lock to keep the honest people honest and to deter those not so honest. If they take the trailer then they have to take the tree too!

I bought the aluminum rack from Harbor Frieght, cut off the excess tongue tubing ,which lowered the weight, and even added some additional lights. Lay a medium and small suitcase on it and it works great !!!! I also had to add a 2" reciever tube to the hitch. About $100 invested !!

Your Rake looks perfect! What is the possibility that it would work behind a California Side Car Daytona Conversion. It has a flat tongue receiver with a Bushtec Pin Hitch??

BTW can you tell me the measurements of the rack and the box you have on it.

I see you have 20" deep and 33" wide (i think you mean long:Shrug How big front to back on the box.

I am looking into getting something like this.
