Hello From Virginia

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum, looking to get some information on trikes in general. My wife has a 2004 Sportster 883 custom. She hasn't ridden it for quite a while and has been thinking the trike route would be better for her. I personally have reservations about her going to a trike and would like to be educated on riding a trike. Can a 883 Sportster be converted to a trike? Would it be better to put a 1200 kit in it? What are the safety concerns of riding a trike?
Just to start a few of the many questions.

Not sure about the 883, but I would think it would make a nice trike, but may be lacking a little in power, especially on hills. If she really wants to ride, I would think a trike would be the answer. They are not hard to learn to ride, just takes some relearning of skills. I finally convinced my hubby I would ride more if I had a trike. He is so happy he listened!

I am in Virginia, too.

Welcome to the forum! Good luck on your decision.

Hi there, and welcome to TrikeTalk.

We actually have several members with sportsters that have have been converted to awesome trikes! I'm sure they will speak up themselves too. My personal opinion is that even the 883 is plenty powerful, especially if your wife rides solo most of the time.

Two up....well you might want to upgrade to a 1200, although even then it isn't absolutely necessary.

As far as riding a trike......no worries! If your only 3-wheel experience is the old ATVs, put that right out of your head. The trike your wife would have is nothing like those! These are extremely stable -- you'd have to really put some aggressive effort into even lifting one wheel, although it can be done. And once she is used to the steering, she will out-maneuver you in the curves. I promise you that!
WELCOME to TRIKE TALK....There are some really good examples of Sportster Trikes on this Forum. I've seen several out on the roads this year. "Fear Not", Modern Trikes are Great. I just recently converted after 40+ years of Motorcycle Riding.....:wtg:
