heated gear

I am looking into heated gear, any suggestions? Also, I know they have battery gloves and gear. Does some gear plug into where the trickle charger is or do I need to add something to my trike?

Thanks
Helen

I have Gerbing, but the Company changed hands since I bought it. Some are battery, whereas others have a pigtail that attaches to the battery. You then have a male/female plug setup. Controllers are also a nice feature as you can regulate temp better.

In Korea, I used a pair of JC Whitney battery powered mittens over Thinsulate lined gloves to ride to base in 20 degree weather. Worked fine, and no wires to hassle with.

I have a Tourmaster Synergy heated jacket, It came with a pig tail that i wirer directly to the battery.
I think its almost ten years old now, My 11 Tri-Glide is the third bike i had it on. The coldest iv'e ridden was 6 degrees F On a 180 mile round trip... Didn't even use the high setting.. I would imagine the newer models are as they say in Brooklyn 'More better...

I have HD jacket liner, pants and gloves....have yet to use them :). Since HD heated gear is Gerbing the only change is that Gerbing will not repair, replace (at least that's what I've been told). Personal preference as to branding.

Heated gear

Thanks for all the responses. I went to Cabellas sporting goods and they had the Gerbing gloves and vest, I liked the way they fit and they were battery controlled. I then went to bass pro and they had nothing and told me to go to Harley, I go to Harley and they don't have the winter gear out yet, it's back in stock.
I have a weekend ride out of town 400 miles, temps between 37-55. I don't have time to save money and order online unfortunately. I guess I will go back to the first store and buy the gloves and vest that are Gerbing and hope for the best. Rode to Arkansas with temps in mid 40's last weekend and my hands were cold and numb, my husband states he doesn't know why I'm complaining, it will be fine...he says that as his bike came with the heated grips and heated seat, haha. For the price of the triglides it should come with it too.

hi radtech40
got my wife the vest she loves it - uses it hunting also -use a small sealed battery -keeps it toasty for her all day- think i'll get me one too!!

I've had the Gerbing gloves/jacket liner(H-D)/and pants (Firstgear) for about 12 years. LOVE them (they all work together). I just bought the Gerbing dual voltage gloves - very expensive, but I can wear them any time, like snow blowing the driveway or just driving to work before the heater warms up. They are the most supple winter gloves I've even tried.
I have the wireless controller - best thing since sliced bread.
I use the chemical heat pads for my feet - don't need heated socks. I also have heated grips. Don't need heated seat - I already have enough padding there.
The heated gear only comes out when the temp is 35 or lower.

I use to hook them up to the Battery Tender plug, but now use a separate plug due to the different amp fuse. Both plugs come out at the same location.

I ride all winter here in Chicago so the gear is really necessary. No helmet, just a hunters fur cap with ear flaps and a balaclava.
The only thing that would be better is if the mfg. would run the wires from top to bottom on the fingers instead of around the sides. I don't know about anyone else, but the tips of my fingers (finger print area)get really cold not the sides of my fingers. Unfortunately none of the heated gear mfg's will do that. I know a few riders that had frostbite and they have the same problem. Even the grips don't heat that area. I have to scrunch up my finger so they contact the grips. Not very safe, but safer then no heated gloves.

Can't wait for winter - my favorite time to ride - probably because I was born in Canada. :)

Just curious, why buy a vest? IMHO, if you're going to get heated gear, get the full jacket with arms. Have to admit I've not tried a vest, but if it's cold enough to need heated gear, I want it to cover as much of me as I can.

Also, as an FYI and FWIW, the heated jacket works great on sort of cold days without being plugged in. Wear it under a hoodie or something like that and it's pretty impressive how warm you'll be without a lot of bulk.

I've tried several different makers and styles of heated gloves but will tell ya mittens are the best. You keep your body heat contained in a mitten vs glove fingers. Several years ago I found a pair of heated mittens that had the index finger separated from the mitten. Worked great. I made a mistake of laying them on the passenger seat when I went into a restaurant. Bye-bye !!! AND I can't find them anywhere and forgot the manufacturer.

One thing do not buy...heated grips. My opinion, a total waste of $$$$$.

I completely disagree about the heated grips. I wouldn't own a bike without them.

There are times when I don't want to dig out the heavy winter gloves, and heated grips with light gloves or even no gloves, make a cool/cold ride pleasurable. And they are there 24/7 so you don't have to remember to bring them along. Many a cool night was saved by them.

Now heated seats I think are a waste of money -IMHO. My ass has never been cold, but my fingers have.

I would never wear mittens for riding a motorcycle......too restrictive....even worse then heavy winter gloves. That's just me.

Your little fat friend loves his heated grips.

Surprised that he'd get cold carrying around that many layers.

I had 'em on the '02, the 'o8 and the '10 just never thought they were worth the $$$$$. Now if you figure out how to apply heat to the inside of your wrist on the blood vessels. That would be a cash cow. i.a. warming wrist bands. You warm or cool the blood in the wrist it effects the whole body.

Man I was against heated grips until the bike I bought had them on from the factory..

That is the best option I think for riding in cool weather.

I have a heated gerbing vest and work well..I find also that the vest, denim shirt and good leather over coat keeps you toasty on the real cold rides..:D

Heated gloves work well too..

I like the three finger mittens with heated liners. With the three finger you can operate all the switches just fine & keep the warmth of the mittens & liners.
If there is a Army surplus around they have a great set from the Air Force but tend to be heavy. Look at snow machine dealers, or most of the major motorcycle catalogs have the three finger.
Insulated bib overalls & heated jacket liner w/leather coat will keep ya warm. If you can keep the body trunk warm then insulate the legs. Warm in Idaho winters !
