Back from a 10 day trip to Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. Stayed on Oahu and, wow, has it changed in 45 years!!! Back then it was pretty easy to get around. Yokohama Bay and beach was the place to spend a lazy Saturday body surfing, snorkeling, and getting a good tan or sunburn. Waikiki was the place to go and spend an evening at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Garden Bar meeting with all the single (and otherwise) young ladies. A ride along the north shore gave you Sunset, Pipeline, Waimea Bay and other great beaches. And a ride up the Pali through the Banyan tree to test yourself against the wind. Now there's a perpetual traffic jam on just about every road.
Note: a LOT of 50cc chinese made scooters - they can park on the sidewalks anywhere free. The place has become one gigantic tourist trap with prices to match.
There's construction going on everywhere. The state bird is the Nene - a kind of goose. They should change it to the crane - as in construction crane. More people are moving there all the time forcing rents and prices higher and higher. Gas wasn't as expensive as I would have thought, $3.00 to $3.30 most places, but milk was more than twice that amount. Did one day tours of the other islands. Maui didn't have much to offer in my opinion, but with only a short tour it's hard to tell. I found Hawaii interesting with the 'black sand' beaches and the active volcano. Kauai was beautiful and the place I would go back to on another trip. Soon there will be direct flights to the island.
Would also like to visit Lanai someday.
