Had to say good bye to my little buddy......

In September of 2000 I drove to MSP to pick up our new Wired haired Deckle (most people call them Dachshund ). Fell in love with the breed while stationed in Germany. Bought our first while living there (in Germany the hunting line is called Teckel, house pet line Deckle). I meet the little guy for the first time as he came out of the freight claim area. From that point on the little guy followed me everywhere. If I was home, he was real close to me (unless someone had food, then I wasn't as important to him!) Our first Deckle was aging fast back then. For two years he brought a bit of the old her back.

He was hard headed, stubborn, and thought nothing of getting into stuff he knew wasn't allowed! It was just a part of his personality. As for WHD's he was huge. Way over the standard size. He was a giant amongst his breed. Our Veterinarian called him "The Mini Beast". I had to take him for one last visit to see Dr Dan yesterday evening........

For the first time in over 28 years the wife and I are in our home that does not have a Deckle in it. :( Seems a bit strange. Except for the first 18 months of my time in the Army I have never been with out a dog in my life. I'm in no rush to get another at this time.

Here is my favorite picture of him. He was already "old" when this was taken.

Every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart.
If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.

I know where you're at, that empty feeling. Keep in mind that The Mini Beast has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge, and is playing and feels no more pain with all of our past pets. ThumbUp

Lost my Border Collie Hunter in Nov.. I still see him waiting to greet me every time i pull into my driveway........

My avatar is my oldest at 14. Also have another at 13. Always had a buddy or 3. Get another just to keep your sanity up and about. One will never forget the past, but another will definitely keep you sane.

Dogs are not the only thing people get very attached to.
We had cats because we have a leash law, so I was not going to put a puppy through that, being a animal lover is very sad at times.
We said no more pets, traveling way too much to get people to sit or pay to have them boarded.
We cried when our pets were put down, it was very sad to see a "friend" go down, but at time it is the best for them.

Sorry for your lose! Our four legged friends definitely hold a big spot in our hearts. And our lives are fuller because of their devotion over the years. Missed but never forgotten.

It is so tough to lose a pet. We had to put our 15 year old dog down several years ago and it was one of the hardest things we ever had to do. Went several years without a dog but now for the past two years have a new dog we both love as last as much as the last one. Depending on how long the wife and I live this one may just make it to the end with us. Never know. He certainly fills a gap in our life!

As everyone has said it is very very hard, but what they gave you over all the years they were with you can not be measured. Yes we all shall pass but I will always I hope be able to have one of these little guys with me to share their love. I thank GOD that is his wisdom has given us a creature that is always glad to be with you.

Felt your pain

It is so hard to say goodbye to your best loyal friend, it tears into a deep part of your soul you never knew existed. We had to say goodbye to our Cocker "Buddy" when he was 16 years old, had him since he was 6 weeks. He was so smart and loving, he traveled the USA and Canada with us when we were trucking, marked a LOT of territory in his day. Liver cancer took him from us as well as a piece of our Hearts.

It took us 3 years to decide to get another Pet, but we knew something was missing in our lives. I read a poem called Rainbow Bridge and it was like a light came on. I discussed it with my Wife and she agreed that it was time, so we began looking and found Drake, our little Yorkie and Trikin' Buddy. What a blessing he has been in our lives.

I would hope you don't wait too long to fill the void you are feeling, but you will know when the time is right. Remember, Puppy Breath is the Best medicine known to Man...and Woman !

Sorry for your loss. We lost two in about a year a llittle over a year ago. We now have two new doggies, AND, by accident have two puppies as well! One puppy is spoken for with a loving couple. The little "runt" is staying with me!! We love our dogs, dont think we'll ever be with out at least one.

Thanks everyone....

New dog isn't in the near future plans for us. As all of you know they are not something one should take lightly. All of our children live elsewhere now. So finding someone to watch a dog is hard. We like to travel too much and take long day rides during the summer. Would have to leave the pup home alone too much. So maybe in the future when I can no longer ride etc I'll look at getting another.

Oh damn Keystone! I hate hearing these stories. I had this same story about 3 months ago with our ole black lab that the wife and I had for over 12 years. It is much like loosing a child or close relative!

I feel for ya my friend. At least, which I am sure has been said, the pup isn't suffering. The lord must have needed a close pet. :pepper:
