Had L4 & L5 lower back fusion surgery when did you can get back on your Trike.

Had fusion surgery April 11 2023. Had 6 week Doc visit and X ray everything looked good. Doc told me to expect 8 months to a year until fusion is solid. Have any Trike riders had lower back fusion surgery and how long before they were able to ride again? I am 76 years old. Thanks

I’d follow the advice of my surgeon, instead of a redneck like me. I’m almost certain that your Surgeon has or will recommend a therapist to council you on a therapy program. Get well as quickly as is safe, and enjoy your ride.

I had L4-L5 fusion done about 14 years ago and I was back on 2 wheels and back at work in 3 months. That was a big mistake on my part. I was 63 then and I'm paying for it now.

6 months

I had L1-L5 decompression and L4- L5 fusion. 3 months physical therapy. 3 months exercise. Went on a 11,544 miles, 46 days trip . No problems. I'm 75.

As you know, everyone is different and heals differently, especially as our age goes up.

I waited 6 months and was doing PT, asked the Doctor and physical therapist about riding. Both said just start by swinging your leg over and just sit on the bike for 10 minutes and work your way up to an hour. If it doesn't hurt getting on and off, you are good to go, just DON'T overdue it.

Worked well for me.

Only thing is we ended up going to a trike, as my right leg and foot go number without warning, so that could lead to us falling over. So went to a trike and been happy ever since.

Good luck and listen to your Doctor and physical therapist.
