GPS Issues With 2014 Tri

I can put up with the general 'clunkiness' of the GPS on my new Tri-Glide, but I have encountered 2 issues I cannot seem to resolve (maybe I'm just dumb...)

- For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to cancel a route. The 'Boom' manual is totally worthless. And I have spent over an hour doinking with it and still cannot solve the mystery...I am beginning to think it cannot be done. Any suggestions?

- I have tried to set general route preferences (e.g., twisties, fastest, etc...) but no matter what I do, the GPS tries to take me on very obscure routes. For example, when I set fastest, meaning the freeway, every time I approach an exit, the lady tells me to 'prepare to take the next exit.' Even though I know that the freeway is the fastest, and most direct, way to my destination. Sure, I can press the mute button to shut her up, but then music from my iPhone is silenced as well. Any thoughts on this?

As usual, thanks in advance for any input.

Bob.

Bob, if you look at the map screen to the right and down near bottom you will see 3 lines with a dot beside them. Touch the 3 lines on touch screen and it will bring up stop route. Hope this helps

:Agree:

Took me awhile to find that, but that is what works for me also.

Thanks, Isabelle...I will give it a try. Sounds hopeful! :pepper:

Isabelle, at al,

OK! The icon with the three lines on the map screen is truly the key that opened the kingdom door. (On my screen, it is right center.) Problem #1 solved.

As I was probing around, I solved problem #2, the issue with the meandering routes. By going into the setup menu area, you can provide guidelines for the gps lady when she maps your route; but I knew that. What takes paying attention to is the SUB-MENU of that menu marked 'avoidances.' If you want freeway travel to be acceptable, you have to be sure that 'HIGHWAYS' remain unchecked. No a huge deal, but using the term 'Freeways' might be a better term. Just say'n.

So, it's all good, and I humbly withdraw my 'clunky' adjective for the gps.

It's sorta not, once you understand the logic of it all. But I still stand by my statement that the 'Boom' manual sorta sucks. It could be more inclusive and descriptive. (Hint to Harley.)

Bob.

Here is a link to the 2015 boom box manual. Much better.

2014 is about 100 pages, 2015 is 180 pages

2014 Nav is 6 pages, 2015 Nav. about 40 pages. It is about $14 if you want to buy the 2015 manual.

Thanks! Great info here, much lacking in the previous (2014) manual. I think I will see if I can get the dealer to cough one up for me.

I did not know that. Thank you!

Took a while but I eventually found all those things too. It's still clunky compared to my Zumo(sure glad I kept mine). It takes forever to save destinations. I can save 40 destinations in the same time it takes me to enter 10 on the H-D unit. The other thing I don't like is saving a spot on a highway(ABC competitors know what I mean). It takes f o r e v e r to enter one of those, but the worst thing is having to sit out in the scortching heat or rain to enter addresses. I take my Zumo into the motel room and enter them there in comfort. Other then those things it's not too bad of a GPS.....especially if you have an address and you want to go to point A from point B.

Good luck

I will have to look into those manuals - thanks for that info.

It's getting better to save addresses, but I still have a few that won't enter. The latest one was last night. I was trying to enter GALINA, IL. As soon as I got GAL it stopped and wouldn't let me add the next letter. There are a few addresses like that - will only go so far and then stop with no additional letters to choose from. They save on my Zumo with no problem.
Anyone else have that problem and if so how did you get around it?

Some times I have to enter an address 3 or 4 times before it finally saves.

Having trouble saving more then one address. Also can only save that address if I say yes to adding to the address book. If I say no it won't do anything. I'm sure I am doing something wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're not the only one. After a year I'm still baffled with the GPS unit. I spent a day making a step by step guide for saving addresses. I thought I had it a couple times, but when I tried it after I thought I had it - NOPE!!
Finally I think I have it - works about 90% of the time - which is way better then it use to be. Still can't figure why on some addresses I can only enter a few letters before it stops and I can't enter any more letters.

The only other issue I have is entering a non address location to the saved folder. Like a point on a highway in the middle of nowhere. It can be done, but it takes a verrrrry looong time to do it. Maybe someone has a better way of doing it then the way I'm doing it.

"Also can only save that address if I say yes to adding to the address book. If I say no it won't do anything." I found if I only hit "yes" once and then exit right after adding to address book - it works most of the time. I hope they eventually get all the bugs worked out of it - but so far the '15 are no different and I really don't see H-D doing anything in the future. Why should they? - they're selling every one they make. No incentive to.

I have posted this a couple of times, but here it is again. I hope it helps.

How to save a location on a 2014 GPS:

1) Select "Navigate"

2) Select "Where to"

3) Select "Address"

4) Enter address

5) press "OK"

6) While the route is being calculated, press the logo/button onthe bottom left side of the screen. (It's not labeled).

7) Scroll down to "save"

8) Select "Saved"

9) Select "Yes"

10) Enter a name

11)Press "OK"

Good luck, and remember #6

When entering an Address:
State, then City/Town, then Street, then number.

It will eliminate letters/numbers as you put them in based on what is AVAILABLE in its database.

You CAN import .gpx files into the unit by USB flash drive if you pre-plan your route .... like with Harley Davidson Ride-Planner or Garmin Basecamp.

That's my exact set of directions also (after hour and hours of trial and error). For me on step 11 I only hit "OK" once and then exit. If I hit "OK" a second time it doesn't seem to save. Don't know why. Does this work for you 100% of the time? Maybe 80%-90% for me. I still have a few times I have to try an address 3 or 4 times before it will be excepted.

On step 6 are you referring to the menu icon in the lower left side of the screen? That's what I use.

Can someone else try to enter the city of Galena, Il. and see if you can get past G A L. That's as far as I can get on my unit so I don't know if it's just my unit or all units. Galena is a pretty well known tourist city and should be in the data base. I tried 3 times to enter it with no success.

Are you able to turn off notifications

Never thought of doing that. Don't know if you can, but if you can't just turn off or down the audio. Problem solved. ThumbUp ThumbUp

When notification it override all other audio

True, but you CAN turn off notifications.
Maybe there is a way. Someone with more user time might have the answer. I would like to know also. ThumbUp

I tried this last night. I entered Country, State and then GALENA. It came up on a list of a few names to choose from. Did you have it spelled correctly?

Yes. After 3 tries - each time I double checked everything up to that point. Sometimes it won't find the street number - that happens to me often, but usually not the name of a city.
I agree with you about the correct spelling. I did catch it one time when it wouldn't find a street name and I did have it mis-spelled. ThumbUp

Are you able to turn off notifications

Yes, If you use a 2015 Boom Box Manual; the instructions are on page 56. " Adjusting Volume and Enable Nav. Prompts"

Press the Home button, Go to Setup, Then Feedback. From there you can adjust the volume or shut off "Enable Nav Prompts" You can also adjust the Beep Volume from this screen.

I hope this helps

Thank You it worked like a champ.

Wouldn't it be great if we had Forum or a Thread devoted just to the new Harley-Davidson Boom Box GPS. I'm sure there are a lot of people being frustrated with trying to understand the new system. I my self am very familiar with the Zumo and have operated one for years. But learning the Harley System is taking me some time. Thanks again for your help.

Watched that, but it still leaves a lot out - it just covers the basics. Each dealer should have at least one person completely knowledgeable on the infotainment system. ThumbUp Every time I ask my dealer a question, I always get "I don't know" or "I'll find out" or I get a wrong answer, but they are getting better......slowly.

I understand the manual for the 2015 version is 3 times as thick as the 2014 manual.

I would rather have a video, but a completely comprehensive manual will suffice.

My Dealer just had a Boom! Box Infotainment seminar. I learned a lot of new stuff. They are getting ALL ATTENDEES a 2015 manual for free. Seems HD puts a full manual in the 15's instead of just the quick start guide. Danielle Bauder (Sales Associate who conducted the class) is planning another get together for using the HD on-line route planner. ThumbUp

When you get 20 users together you get a lot of questions answered.

New Scala Rider GX9 headsets bluetooth correctly with the Boom! Box system and my S4. I know now how to get my text messages read to me while riding! :pepper: Newest software download went for 9 trip waypoints to 100 ...YEAH!!!:D

At my 1 year anniversary of my purchase I should have it all figured out. ;)

That's awesome that the had a get together like that to answer questions and give tips on how to use it. Wish more dealers would do the same.

2014 Nav Addresses

I finally made a little improvement on getting my trip destinations to lock in. When you punch "Navigation" > "Where to" > "Address", the system defaults to "street". If you bypass that and start at the bottom with "State" and work your way back words, you will be able to "Save" the address. After 2 days of multiple attempts to get a couple addresses to "Save" I finally managed 2 of them. I am a member of the Patriot Guard Riders and I need to get a wide variety of address "saved" in the radio. I'm going to get with my local dealer and see if they are planning a seminar on this system. It looks impressive but it's not worth a crap if you can't get it to function.

Redio Upgrade

I just completed an upgrade on the radio and it seems to have made the Nav system somewhat better. Now when I push "Recent", I see all the destinations I previously entered.

Not the same issues you listed but my GPS screen just turned Lime Green with White Roads anywhere outside of a major city. Totally unable to see the roads, other than interstates while riding. Took it in for scheduled service and mentioned the problem. After working with it and even pulling the master fuse for 5 minutes to reset everything they decided to replace it with a 'NEW Remanufactured Unit'
