My 2019 DCT has an issue. when engine is strained going up hills especially in Econ mode, makes a terrible sound on the left side of the engine. It isn't valves, but no one can figure out what is causing it. Doesn't loose power, just really sounds like the engine is going to explode. Dealer doesn't want to fool with it until December. Any good solid ideas. I can't even find anyone who had this happen. I've owned 10 Wings and never had an issue like this

I dont own a goldwing, but the last snowmobile i had had three settings...eco, trail, sport i think they were. On that, eco cut fuel and retarded timing. I would guess the same with your bike.....

Any vehicle ive owned that had to be shifted, never liked a call for power at a lower rpm....

Happy riding....

Sounds like possible timing. Lugging it down too far. Maybe one of the sensors causing this.

If there's a way to gear it down I WOULD, when climb'n a hill (I never road a DCT/so not an expert here) BUT even with standard shift'n vehicles, we all have to downshift first before climb'n that hill...

Max, I think you are correct. I went to Tour Mode and it is much better. I wonder why Honda doesn't suggest that in their materials
Listen to your engine. It lets you know when you need to alter your drive modes. Your very description tells you the motor is lagging in Econo mode. Use the Tour mode or, even better, the Sport mode. It's not like the MPG will drop that much to get peace of mind!

I accidently put it in Sport mode once and almost took the front wheel off the ground. I'm still having the same issue whether it be in Tour or Econ. Something is not right when it makes that sound like the valves are going to be swallowed up regardless of what mode I ride in. I'm down in Fla now riding everyday and it still makes that noise. No. better, no worse but I sure take off slower now and I never did take off like a bullet anyway

Update.. Been riding down here in Fla. The rattling sound is evident in Econ, Tour and especially between 1500 and 2000 RPMs. Any strain on the engine causes the sound and it is getting worse. Looked on every site I can find and no one I found has ever experienced this on a Wing. I called a local dealer that I really don't know well and will take the Trike in when I return north next week. The only thing most agree on is that the engine should not sound like that regardless of the driving mode I am riding in. (Thank you Papa Zook for your assistance helping me to get back on the website)

Honda Corporation has a recall in replace for all 2018-2021 Honda Gold Wings. Basically, the recall replaces the UBS Bolt. OEM UBS Bolts have a structural defect.

The conditions you described on your ride sound a lot like what some riders are reporting on the GL1800 Riders forum.

Go on the Honda Powersports website, look for recalls and type in your VIN number. It immediately tells you if you are affected. Do this before your take your trike to the shop, and ask the dealer if this could be the problem.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Steve for the info. I checked the VIN and mine is possibly affected. The dealer doesn't have much info on it yet but they should be the end of the month he said.

I take it in tomorrow morning. Hope they find the problem
You folks are going to love this one......Took my Trike to the dealer on Friday. Two different techs rode it and heard the noise. After checking different areas one of the techs thought about taking off the drinking cup on the handbars. The rattle almost totally disappeared. Still a little rattle somewhere but greatly reduced. I asked who thought of that. The Service writer introduced me and I handed him a twenty and insisted he have lunch on me. I felt like an idiot for not realizing that may be the issue months ago.

Hahaha! Your not the first one to have a rattle like that. Luckily I was able to find mine without having to take it in for service.

I have a RAM mount cup holder and usually have a tall metal coffee cup in there. I noticed an annoying rattle too when I first started using it. I found a thin tall coozie, more like a neoprene sleeve, that fit nicely onto the cup and my rattle completely disappeared.

Well, here is an update. Thought we had the rattle issue solved last winter with the cup removal. Brought it to Florida in April and the noisy rattle in the left cylinder head to still there and worse. Any time you are in a higher gear and put stress on the engine the left side rattles like the the devil. It happens in all riding modes and especially at lower rpm's ( 1500-2000). The bike must be warm before it happens and not just 3 bars but ;riding in 75 plus outside temperatures The longer the ride the worse it gets. Nothing is loose on the Trike. I certainly sounds like it is in the engine. My dealer in Ohio is busy as usual this time of the year so getting fast service is going to be a long time. I''ve read everything I can on this issue but there isn't much in the way of info. Had 10 wings and never had a problem with one like this. These engines are usually bullet proof

Could be lugging the engine is causing the starter/alternator drive to rattle. It's on the left side rear of the engine and some have has issues with them coming loose. Mine (2019 DCT) rattles bad if I let the engine lug so I avoid it at all costs. I think the root cause is the engine is really lean straight from Honda to get it past US EPA regulations.

It appears the rattle makes me think it may be a loose tensioner belt? Papa Zook, what do you think? Is that even a possibility?
