Goldwing miles?

I am looking at a 2001 Gold Wing with 120,000 is that too many miles?

It's a good thing. It means you can get a great bike for less $$.

Its just about prebroken in.
If the price is right. I would not be concerned with the mileage.

</div>In the "Old Days" that was a lot of miles but the GL1800 isn't old technology. I know of several over 200,000 and a few over 250,000 miles. The '01 had it's issues but I expect the original owner got all the recalls and updates seen to. My '06 is coming up on 111,000 and going strong. Maintenance and abuse are the keys. If both were done (or not) that will be the deciding factors. Of course that $$$$ is also a big one. <br />

Take the vin # to Honda dealer and see if the all the factory recalls and frame checks have done. Mine was a 2001 and it hadn't had any of the checks done. Also pull the side covers and look behind the battery at the welds there also. If you go to gl1800riders and do search for frame cracks their is a lot of info on this.

These are the known frame cracks. The only other tyhing I would do is look for a trike take off final drive and driveshaft as a spare for your bike.

The weak points on a wing
As stated check the welds
The alternators have a tendency to fail around 85,000 miles, see if one has been replaces
Check and see if timing belt was done yet?
If price is right and it has not been done have it done and you are good for 120,000 more miles.
You did say Goldwing and I am assuming a 2 wheel not Trike!

On the 1800s you have a timing chain and not a belt or belts like the earlier models. They dont need replacement.

Wow you learn something every day. They finally really made them built proof. Now you never have to bring it in for service. Plugs go 100,000 miles, ( and they can be changed in 1 1/2 hours. )timing chain last almost forever. No rear chain or rubber band,and sprockets. fuel injection...now if they get front tires that last 50,000 miles..well the rears will on the trike.

Are the broken welds on the 2001 models recall item? Is the fix obvious?? I want an 1800 but can't afford a newer model. I've decided a wing is the best choice for the wife's back problems. I don't like all the Tupperware but having her ride with me is worth putting up with it.

I believe the Broken Weld issues were regarding the 2003 & 2004 models. You should be able to run the VIN by a Honda Dealer Service Department and they can give the definitive answer.
Always a good idea to run the VIN on any used unit you are looking at.

I did the same thing before I bought my current ride. I called the dealership I use, they ran the number and told be she had a clear history. My Wing has been completely trouble free. Just needed some minor adjustments.

The weld issue was for '01 thru '04 models.

I agree with so many that have suggested doing the VIN search. Any Honda dealer should be able to do that for you.
