Fuel tank capacity

My Honda VTX1300 will go on reserve at 147 miles and 4 gals pretty muck like clockwork.

I have 2015 Freewheeler, and when I ride far and long my fuel warning light comes on. The reserve warning tells me I have 25 miles to empty. All that being said when I get to the fuel pump I can only put 4 gallons of gas. I took it to the HD where I bought the bike and the technician told me I had to learn my bike. Well that being said I told her I wanted my bike back since they could not fix it. There is something wrong with the computer system that controls the fuel data. Harley is so lazy to examine it, they just tell you take two aspirins, and ride. When I fill the tank after 4 gallons the reserve screen tells me I have 204 mile to empty. Doing the math at 204 divided by the 6 gal capacity I' m getting 34 mile to the gal. In which I fine with. The problem still not resolve because when I ride far and long I have the same issues. You are not alone! you cannot burp two gallons of air space from the tank. Harley needs to get off their A&& and provide their customers a real solution. until then good riding stay save, and don't run out of patience and gas!!!!

With my 2011 Tri-Glide when the fuel icon comes on at [approx.] 30 miles to empty and starts counting down ' At that point there is 2 Gal's left in the tank to dry.... Then When the countdown hits [approx.] 10 miles to empty the countdown stops and it just reads ''Low'' And then There is about a gal left to dry..
So at least on my Tri... If i stop and get gas when the fuel light first comes on it takes 4 gals to fill.. 4 gal Plus 2 gal still in the tank equals 6 gals...

After the r30 runs out you still have a gallon left. I do anyway :Shrug: like the guy said, get to know your scoot!
Sorry for the repeat, but the count down is only till reserve is met. Low means 1gal left before seeking HELP

Msocko is absolutely correct about running the tank dry. Very bad idea as the fuel acts not only as a lubricant but as a coolant. And cavitation is not good for any pump.
I've been looking at this fill problem since I first got the Tglide. I am working on adapting a piece of copper tubing that will extend just past the opening into the tank WITHOUT FALLING IN. This hopefully will allow the air to escape so the gasoline nozzle will not shut off prematurely. I think.

Come to think of it, the easiest thing to do may be to carry a small glass container that can be manually poured into the tank to finish filling the tank all the way. After having done this a time or two you'll likely know just how much to put in the bottle to finish filling the tank. The only other thing you may need is a small funnel and a piece of yesterday's newspaper to wipe the funnel out with.

BTW: I ride a Valk 1500. It does not have a fuel guage. In the course of 25,000 + miles, it has never been a problem. The tank holds 5.3 gallons of which somewhat less than one gallon is held in reserve. Whatever the amount of the reserve really doesn't matter. What does matter is that this amount will take me at least 20 miles further down the road running very fast and at least 30 miles running consertavilly. I determined these distances by actually running the tank dry while carrying a fuel container to get me to a station after running dry.

As as I have a 3 gallon belly tank there's 8.3 gallons on board when full up. At 25 mpg, that's 200 miles with .3 gallons remaining. I religiously reset the odometer at each fill-up & begin looking for a station at about 180 miles. Never had a problem.

I used to have a GW Trike. If I didn't burp it it wouldn't fill all the way. Same with my RSTD,it always needed a good shake to get the most gas in it.

​Thanks a lot, DPK. Ya just fattened up my credit card bill by $19.95 for that Mc Cuff. That's easier than all the work I've been putting into those failed fabrications I've wasted my time on. But those ideas kept me in the garage where the trike is and that's what counts. That way Ma thinks I'm actually doing something productive.

Have you tried rocking the trike when you fill it? When it seems like the tank is full, I just bump the side a few times and the gas level goes down. I do this several times to fill the tank.

You got that right! My tank shrank after triking my 2 wheeler out, for sure. For the huge tank I have (Yamaha Stratoliner), there appears to be only about 4 "usable" gallons of gas? On a 1900cc?? Just my luck, and no where to put an auxiliary tank that I like. Oh well, let us know how that McCuff thing works out, it might be a future investment for me as well. I really need to get off the trike and get the blood moving in my bad knees every 100 miles anyway.........

Just received an e-mail this AM from paypal that they got notice from Mc Cuff that they just now received my order. So how long it's gonna take to get the 'cuff' is anybody's guess but I'll try it first chance I get and report back.

No other way to explain it...Its a 6 gal tank' =If you can't get 6 gal's in from empty/dry... Then its gotta be Shrinkage.... :Shrug:

When I stop for fuel, I always take a few minutes and use the restroom, get water, snack bar, whatever ........... This allows the engine heat under the tank to dissipate some. I have found this seems to allow me to put more fuel in the tank.
