Fuel tank capacity

I don't even know how to phrase this question, so bear with me. *When filling the gas tank, I notice that I am not getting anywhere near the amount my husband does in the motorcycle. *I am averaging a gallon to a gallon and a half less than him. *He kept saying I wasn't filling it enough. *Well my little red light came on yesterday n he filled it. He could only get almost 3.5 gallons in a 5.5 gallon tank. *He figures that there is roughly 1- 1.5 gallons not totally filling up. *I never had this problem with my other trike. *Anyone else have this problem? *
* *I did try and search the forum, but couldn't find anything like this. *Maybe it's just me, but hats quite a bit of gas not going in the tank. *Thanks

With my Tri-Glide, when the pump clicks off, I pull the nozzle out a little hold the bellows back by hand and I can get another 3/4 gal in...

When the light comes on you should have at least 1 gal (maybe more) in reserve.

That's what we thought, so we should have been able to pump 1-1.5 more gallons in than what we did. *He could only get almost 3.5 in. I've never had this problem with my other trike. *I'm confused

Nobody wants to run out unplanned but if you have any doubt of the actual reserve amount it might not be a bad idea to have a gallon can of gas along and let it run out. That way you have an idea how much that reserve is and how far you can go in an emergency. Looks like your tanks should hold 5.5 gallons. But that is probably fully topped off. There's always a little variation in that level so if you can determine what actual reserve is you should be closer to solving the mystery.

I've owned three GL1800s and each of them had different reserve level when the low fuel warning came on. GO FIGURE .. :xszpv::xszpv:

Then the low fuel light or the gauge is off. My ex Sportster was way off, And even my Victory Gunner is a little flakey... Maybe the angle of the gas tank has changed after the bike was Triked. :Shrug:

I will try that, guess I will just run up and down the road at the house. Its just wierd, my Husband n I both fill up at the same time n I am consistently pumping less than him and I'm lower than when we get to the pumps and pump less than him when we are there. He was sure i wasnt filling it full, til he pumped it yesterday, and now he understands what im talking about. *Doesn't compute to me.

Shouldn't have changes the angle too much, my other trike didn't have this issue

Figure out your mpg,then you will know at x miles to fill up. I don't trust my low fuel light.

Since you say the fuel is topped off after filling, and it reads low, I'd suspect the fuel tank sensor. As far as the amount of fuel at fill up, you may be getting a lot better mpg than your hubby....

If you fill with fuel all the way to the top and you can see the gas, it's full. Now when you drive off and your gage reads below full, then you have a gage problem. I don't even know if I have a low fuel light :Shrug: i always fill up around 150 miles, I use miles driven and not the fuel gage to refuel.

I would think you are getting some where in the mid 30"s for mileage per gallon. I'm getting 34. But it depends on how you drive.

Your fuel tank sending unit either needs adjustment or replacement. It has a float in it that is out of whack. If it does not register full when it is full, then it thinks it's lower than it is when the light comes on. Your dealer should be able to address this .

I tried to rock it. And then checked the tank, it was still full to the top. I tried that yesterday

Most riders use that method. Some of us are having too much fun and forget to pay attention to the odometer. That is why I carry an extra 4 gallons when I leave town..... :xszpv::xszpv:

IMO I wouldn't run it out of gas on Purpose, it's tough on the pump when it cavitates due to no fuel, could lead to early pump failure.

calling the dealer tomorrow. As this is a new kit, I've had a few small technical difficulties. However, the dealer and Jim from Hannigan have been great to work with. I'm just ready for the weather to turn so we can get some riding in.

Have you tried gently rocking the trike side to side? When I fill my tank and the gas comes up into the neck if I gently rock the trike side to side it burps itself and I can add a bit more fuel.

I tried rocking it yesterday, or what I called the shimmy/shake, and the gas stayed right where it was, then less than 5 miles down the road, I had 3/4 of a tank.

This is not a Hannigan issue, it's an Indian issue.

I know this is NOT a Hannigan issue. *I stated I've had some technical difficulties and Jim, from Hannigan was most helpful. *The fuel question that I was asking was a separate question to the group as i have not had this problem with my previous trike kit. *I was not implying that this was a Hannigan issue, I was complimenting Jim on helping me with some technical issues I've had, but not mentioned because they were not relevant to this question. Sorry if my mention of him did that.

Filling TG Tank

I too bring the nozzle up a litte. I also put my passenger floorboard up and shake the TG and the gas goes down and I can put more in. I sometimes I get almost another gallon in the tank. Like it when the R is over 200 miles!
