front tire milage?

How many miles should I expect out of my factory 2012 goldwing front tire once its tricked? I bought my bike new and had it converted out of the crate.so far I have 8300 miles on it.

The Bridgestone was bald at 7500 miles. The first Pilot Activ was good for about 16,500 and the second Pilot Activ went about 22,000.

This tread begs a story about tire wear:

I had a work colleague who put 70,000 miles on a factory set on a Ford pickup truck. It was time for new tires.

The same factory tires were still available. They were rated at 60,000 miles. His spare had never been used, therefore he bought three and used the spare. He then took the best of the 4 and placed in the spare position.

Here it comes. He then ask the tire technician, " how long would you expect these tires to last"? To which the technician said, "Normally I would say 60,000 miles, but for you, 70,000 miles"! We all ask stupid things once in awhile.

MPA's rear tire on the front mounted reversed at 41psi, will get you over 25,000+ miles.

I had my dealer mount a MPA on a chrome front rim when I bought my new 06 Trike.
I wanted a front rim to match my chrome rear rims.
I changed my first one at appox 28,000 miles.

I Triked my GW new in '08. The OEM tire lasted 8,000 miles. Was "scalloped" badly causing a rough ride. I now have 12,000 miles on my new MPA and it need changing soon due to scalloping again but it took longer to get there. By the way, the direction of rotation does not make a bit of a difference in tire wear.

<div class="message">Hey Lucky,<br />
How did you balance your fron tire?</div>

</div>

</div>Haven't seen an answer to that question yet, so I'll offer mine: I injected the correct amount of RIDE-ON which both balances and seals the tire against punctures. I did that 8,000+ miles ago and the MPA (reverse) still looks like new. (Yep, I put it in the rear tires, too.)

Rosy, I am using the balancing beads in the tire. Will probably go with the Ride-On system next time.

If you have the auto pressure sending system on your trike, I am sure you can not use this product, is this correct?
Another question I have is, will the inside of your tire look like when you use Fix-A-Flat type product all googie, and dealers really get upset when they have to change the tire.
Another question I have is, will this product harden after so many miles, or will it still be fluid?
I have Dyna Beads in my tire and it rides great and I should get good mileage out of my MPA.

Rosy, Thank you for your thoughts. As it turns out, I have research the Ride-On product and found that your concerns have been taken care of or never really existed. I found it does not affect TPMS if used correctly. It does not solidify (or tire balancing will not happen) and the "goop" inside of the tire is radially dispersed and coats the inner circumference of the tire to achieve balancing and puncture sealing. If the tire has been sitting for a long time and the "goop" does get on the inside of the rim, it is easily removed. I got this information from their web site.

Thank you very much for answering my questions. I really never knew about this product. I went with what my shop recommended for balancing the tire. As soon as I get around to it, I may head back to them and have my rear tires done. I figure if truckers have been doing this for years, then it shouldn't be bad. My shop also said the beads will help in reducing the cupping of the front tire. So far, they are correct.
Again thanks for the info!

I just changed my front last month, this was my second front tire. The first on, which was the stock radial was only good fo about 7200 miles, the second one which was a MPA in reverse had over 25,000 miles on it and still had over half the original tread. The only reason I changed it was because of cupping, which affected the low speed steering. The cupping apparently came about because somewhere I lost the weights which were used to balance it. The current on is also balanced with weights, and the ride is extremely smooth.

My opinion is balance with Dyna Beads if you can. I have heard they reduce cupping and you will never loose them.

Good info for a new trike rider, but a long-time motorcycle rider. Let me ask a stupid question....several of you have referred to an MPA tire. What is that? I've had all kinds of tires over the years but don't recognize that name, brand or model.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I have had RIDE-ON in all three tires for over a year. I forgot to mention that I also have TPMS and the RIDE-ON has no effect on that functionality as just last week the LED in the front tire valve stem was flashing, indicating that the pressure had dropped 4 lbs. The tire "looked" and acted just fine but the pressure gauge agreed with the TPMS. (There's a lesson there: don't trust appearances!)

Thank you. I really like it when trikers experiences are noted, this is really helpful to the rest of us. Not just hearsay but something you can put your finger on!
There are so many products out there which are very helpful to us, but we may never come across them in our part of the country. This is also helpful to some vendors/shops when we ask about certain products and they take the time to research them and then use them. I believe Dyna Beads was one product which is being used at my shop, which really benefits the tire wear.
Thank you fellow trikers for your input!

An MPA is the Michelin Pilot Activ which is a bias ply rear tire for a crotch rocket. For some of the others, being a rear tire it has almost twice the tread depth of a front which gives it its longevity when run on the front of a trike. Being a bias ply it also wears longer and gives you less steering effort

Just a FWIW...removed my MPA after 24,000 trouble free miles, still lots of tread left but was going on a 6500 mile trip so went ahead and changed. Tread was still smooth with no cupping....mounted in reverse, standard balancing, 41# pressure. BTW, mounted another MPA....

I was able to get around 7500 miles out of the OEM tire on our triked Wing. Replaced it with an MPA mounted in reverse and it looks as good now around 20,000 miles later as it did when we installed it. Great replacement tire in my opinion.
