Looking for yourthoughts / experience as to why this would have happened.<o:p></o>

I have a 2012 GL1800 with a Lehman Monarch II SA kit thatwas built by Lehman in Spearfish SD in 2012. The unit was built new as orderedby a local Honda dealer on speculation. The rig sat for 2 years at the dealership and I purchased it in 2014with 70 miles on the clock.Took the 1[SUP]st[/SUP]maiden voyage with it in 2015 and put 9,000 miles on it in one trip.No problems at that point however No Brake recall had been done.<o:p></o>

Last weekend, rode Trike pulling our trailer on a 300 milelong weekend. Upon leaving to returnhome my FRONT BRAKE locked up solid and couldn’t move the bike at all. Luckily I was just at the top of thedriveway.I had to crack open the frontbrake bleed values and relieve the pressure on the pistons allowing me to getit back down the driveway and off the road.Call Rescue + and was flat-bedded to a large Honda & trike dealer 70miles away. They were surprised to hear of the front brake issue since the recall history is related to rear brake dragging. However, they performed the #23 Honda BrakeRecall service. Picked the Bike up 2 days later but the dealer couldnot positively confirm what would have caused the front brake to lock up. Offeredonly “Could have been this” type explanations.Rode the trike 100 miles back home, with on problems. <o:p></o>

Now I’m preparing to leave on another cross country trip andconcerned about this issue happening again without really knowing what causedit in the first place. As you can imagine, if the lock up happened at 70 MPH Iwould not be writing this story. I justreplaced the front tire as well as new front brakes; all seems to be fine atthis point. <o:p></o>

As a side question, I did notice that the original Hondapads have the shin on the inner pad only as compared to the EBC’s replacementswhich have shims on both pads. Is this normal for the EBC’s?<o:p></o>

Thanks for your responses.<o:p></o>

On the brake lockup, I am suspecting that after sitting for two years and no maintenance, that the system had absorbed moisture. When the temperature got high a week ago the moisture vapor expanded locking the brakes. When the dealer did the recall service and changed the fluid it solved the front brake problem. I doubt you will have any further problems. Remember that the brake fluid is supposed to be changed every two years or 12,000 miles.

As far as the pads go I don't remember what the OEM pads had on them. Maybe someone else will know or can look it up.

Which front caliper was it ???? The left ????

Unless you asked for front brake fluid to be replaced, it is not part of the recall.
I assume it was changed trying to find out what locked up the front brakes

Which front caliper was it ???? The left ????

It was the left front caliper

The dealer stated that they used 6 pts of brake fluid + 2 more for the trike, My understanding is that 6 pts is the normal amount for just the GL's brake system

Jim, Can you tell me what the functional purpose is for the shims on the piston face of brake pads?

The LEFT FRONT caliper and the secondary mastercylinder located above the LEFT FRONT caliper are part of the linked rear brake system. The recall should have replaced that secondary mastercylinder and bled the brakes including the LEFT FRONT caliper.

Jim, the work order states that they did replace the front left secondary master and based on the amount of fluid I assume they must have replaced the fluid, The W/O states a complete flush.

Jim, what is the % percentage front to back brakes when you use the front brake only? What is
it when you only use the rear brakes? Speaking of the Lehman Monarch II Kit Brake dust is unbelievable on my wheels, should paint them black. Need to get my trike in for that recall.

The RECALL states that they MUST ALSO REPLACE the main rear Master cylinder...
Not just one but BOTH Of them...
It IS stated in the recall to do both, not just inspect, but to REPLACE both of them
