Frigging mirrors

Okay, most are probably wondering............What?

Well, I have a VW trike that I utilized the back part of the bug body for the rear of the trike. Now later on I decided to extend a small flat bed above the engine that includes the fuel tank. Originally I could only have 5 gallons of fuel but now have an 11 gallon tank. Not to babble on so I'll get to the issue.

With the new tank setting above the flat bed it blocks the dang mirrors on my handle bars. I can "kind" of see behind me but not as well as I would like.

So, with that said, I am trying to find some mirrors that have extended shafts(?) or extend out beyond the ends of my handle bars. I have been doing some searching and really haven't found anything that isn't insane priced or just so plain that I don't want them.

I've looked as some of the ones that tighten up in the ends of the bars and either they are just flat fulgly or they are insane priced. The bars are 1" bars in case someone runs across a nice set for the ends of the bars.

I'm thinking that I need about 12" from where the mirrors currently mount.

Of course I'm not above doing modding to make a nice set work.

Here is one set that I picked out: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UWIKWH6/...I30NCBYOCIOZ2L

A little more than I want to spend and even these will have to have some kind of modded and extended mount made in order for them to work properly.

Maybe I am overlooking something? Hence starting this thread. :p

Thanks in advance to all our awesome members with amazing ideas. :pepper:

Have you thought of a rear view camera/monitor system? They seem to start at about $35.00 on the interwebz for wired ones and go up from there. Some are rear monitors, some backup cameras. If you go with a backup system it could be wired to fool it into thinking it was in reverse all the time. Some states require an actual mirror, but is could be anything that looks acceptable as long as it is there, you would be using the monitor anyway. I found a bunch of kits on the net of all prices on Amazon, ebay and even Wallyworld by putting in "rear view monitor system" in the search box

Ya know, I really hadn't thought of that! See, that is why I posted the thread. :p

That is sure something to think about for sure.

Thanks for the input Ozark!

Are you using Harley handlebar controls? The clutch mount & front brake mount offer a potential location for two mirrors.
I'm running a stock Harley hydraulic clutch control for my rear brakes on the left, & a front brake master cylinder on the right. I'm using the long stem stock style/optional, extended, touring mirror set on my trike on both right & left sides.
They give a good view to the rear that the stock short stem units wouldn't give me. I don't have the part# offhand, but I got them from vtwin mfg. as a matching pair.

Not sure your situation in WY or feelings on running only 1 mirror, but that could lower your cost & still give you a clear rear view if you like the custom style you link to.
Of course two mirrors are best safety wise, and as some would think appearance wise too, but some states only require 1 rear view mirror...

Actually yes, it does have the stock Harley controls! The right throttle control has a mirror mount however the left side doesn't have a mirror mount on the control.

Have you got a link to the ones your using man?

Have you thought about bar end mirrors?

Here's a pic of one that is flipped down, but they can adjust go up, out to the side, where ever you want.

There are more pics (they come in oval or round) and specs HERE.

I have looked at those Kevin. A couple of issues though; most are just pretty plain jane looking mirrors or they are insanely expensive.

These are sort of plain Jane style, but they worked for me.
They are Vtwin Mfg part# 34-0296, list $31.96/pair
If you need 12" for clearance, these are only 8".
There are many other styles to choose from vtwin, & they sell just the stems or mounts if you want to make a custom set...
