freewheeler and the oil cooler

G

gerald martin

I have a 2015 freewheeler. I live in Vernon BC Canada. In the summer it gets pretty hot here ( 95 to 100 F ) so the oil gets up to around 260 with the stock cooler. I have added an extra jagg 10 row vertical cooler so the oil runs through both coolers. This has cooled my oil down to about 220. My question is will this harm my bike? Will it cause the oil pump to work harder an then fail? Will I lose oil pressure? ( my oil light goes out as soon as I start the Trike) Any response would help me good or bad
Thanks in advance for your comments

Plumbed in the same way except I don't have the shut off bypass for the ability to use only one cooler. My stock filter adapter has a thermostat so if the oil cools off to below 185 it will close by itself. I used the stock oil cleaner plus the jagg 10 row vertical. The oil hose from the stock oil filter adapter in to the stock oil cooler out the stock oil cooler into the jagg oil cooler, out the jagg oil cooler back to the stock oil filter adapter. That way it makes a complete circle Works good but don't know if the oil pressure from the oil pump is strong enough to pump through all those passages. Don't seem to be having any problems but just checking to see if anyone has done it and how it worked

It has always been my understanding that oil temp. should be at least 150 degrees to maintain good combustion?

Todays engines are different than my old 80" evo but im old school, I have always believed that heat kills.

When I first got my bike 26 yrs. ago people laughed at me for installing an oil cooler controlled by a 180 degree thermostat but I have never regretted it!

The cooler the better and I never had to do any major work on the engine for 100,000 miles. Go figure?

My VTX is water cooled. I'm told that water temps and oil temps run about the same. My water temp runs highway at 185 degrees. Water temp at red lights run 208 to 216 per the temp fan switch. Seems anything below 216 is good to go. At least for a Honda VTX V-twin. No oil cooler.

We have been around this track a few times. Harley Davidson say 260* is "normal" oil operating temperature. Anything below 212* will not 'burn off' any water or moisture that can accumulate in your oil. The average thermal breakdown on most synthetic oil is around 400*

I live on the Mojave Desert in Southern California, and we have a house in Bullhead City, Az. Temperatures are well over 100* for weeks at a time. I've been on Harleys since 1970 (British bikes before that) and have never added additional cooling to any Harley I've owned. This Freewheeler is my second Harley Trike, 4th if you count the ones my wife has owned. We have never had a problem with any of them. I put oil temp gages on my '09 and wife's '11 tri-glides. I have seen oil temps near 300* when stuck in traffic, but as soon as we get air across the engines they cool back down.

I traded the '09 with about 55,000 miles and never had any mechanical problems. Wife's '11 went away with 45,000 miles.

Good Luck, enjoy that 'Free

What I am asking if any harm will come from running two oil coolers

gerald. Your answer is really easy. The lifters in the HD are kind of weak but get the job done. If hot at an idle your red oil pressure lite is off and you do not hear excessive lifter clatter then I would think you are good to go. If your oil pressure is to low the lifters let you know first.

If they are thermostatically controlled to a certain temp how could it hurt?

:Coffee: When the temp is low it doesn't pass any oil through, when the temp is high enough to open the thermostat it will flow through the cooler.

Thanks for the feed back. My lifters make no noise at all and the bike runs cooler
