I saw them in the new catalog and thought they serve no purpose and are ugly to boot.

Wish they would come up with a fender scuff mark solution (without the clear panels ) that looks good- the rails aren'appealing I don't think. IMHO.

i put gold automtive vinel with red pin strips on the front of mine looks good

Actually HD has not one but two other choices: a fender bra for about $100 (part # 57892-11) and what they call scuff guards for about $28 each(part #'s 89968-11, 83976-10). I saw both of these the other day at the dealer. As far as "looking good" I'll leave that for you to decide.
