I was just reading different articles on how long the engines last on the Harleys. I was just curious to hear from the riders out there who have GL1800's. How many miles do you have on your cycles and did you have to do any major engine work ? How long has the average GL1800 gone with no major work on the engine ? I just purchased a 2005 GL1800 Lehman Trike and I love it.

I know one near 400K and no eng or trans work. He did have a rear diff replaced and alternator.

My nephew has 200K on an 02 that he purchased in 05 with 1500 miles on it never an issue only general maintenance. One valve adjustment a bunch of oil changes.

I only put 40K on my new 05, I only replaced a battery

Changing the oil is simple, now the air filter at 25K is a different story

Thank you for your information. I always knew these engines would run a long time, but I wanted to hear it from those who have put all these miles on them.

P.s. I presume you change the oil every 3-4,000 miles. The dealer said they use the semi-synthetic Honda Oil.

WOW i'm falling behind. I bought my 2002 trike in 2005 and i only have 32000 miles.

I have replaced forks and a half shaft but no major engine work just upkeep.

I have seen several wings with 500,000 plus on them. some looked hagered and some looked almost new.

Is that not why we bought GOLDWINGS because they last?

I have a friend with a 2 wheel 2002 Goldwing with 189,00, taking it to Sturgis every year ( yes ride, he is 66 . Conn. . to and back. ) this is his 4 th ( 78 ,83, ,95 wing. He has sold all his old ones to friends, except his 95 with 230,000 on it. And they ride every where with him. Many have 200,000 on the clock ...He changes the oil after every long trip, or every 8,000 miles. New battery every 3 years and new alternator brushes every 40,000 miles. Tires, brakes of course. Motor never touched new plugs every 2years aprox 40,000 miles . He broke his hip and was off it for a year hence the low mileage.

My first oil change on a new GL at 2500, then I convert to Amsoil full synthetic, after that every 5K -6K

They had this question on another 1800 fourm. So many replyed with over 250,000 miles it said that that was when the wing was broken in. A lot over 400,000 miles and one with 826,000 miles So change oil and ride. Be safe and enjoy the ride. Larry

I have to say, I am amazed at these high trouble free miles on the GW's. But I guess I should not be surprised based on the reputation Honda has for reliability. I can sure see why all of you would go for a Wing over a HD. Someday, I may have to check them out. But I have spent a huge amount of $$$ to cool my TG down, boost up the power, and bling it out, so I gotta run it for a while to justify this expense in my walnut sized brain.
These GoldWing numbers are very impressive indeed.

And here I was originally concerned about buying my current trike with 44,00 on the clock. I guess this thread puts that concern to rest for good, lol. ThumbUp

I would not hesitate to buy a wing with 80,000 . I would Change plugs, oil and timing belt. Be good for an other 80,000 to 100,000. I love my 1500 and even being almost 20 years old would not hesitate to go cross country with it tomorrow.

Trent enjoy your TG and look at it this way... If yo say paid 30K forget the TTl and sold it in 12 months for 25K then it cost you $416.67 per month to ride it. You couldn't lease one for that I would suppose. So enjoy and if you ever decide to sell or trade, just move on and enjoy your experiences.

I owned a Can Am for 10 months and it was my most expensive adventure, sure glad to be back on a Gl1800.

The Tri Glide is a beautiful bike.

One of the guys in my motorcycle club has a Goldwing with 124K on it, he swears he has not done anything but change the oil every 4K! He is a police officer and would not lie, but he is kind of an ass!:D

I feel better getting this off my chest!pepper
