Check engine/battery warning lights

Today I took my 2012 to the shop for the 1,000 mile service and told them that when the engine was hot after leaving the big road and pulling into city traffic that I had these two warning lights appear several times.

I was told that Harley had identified a few defective thermal switches in some recent voltage regulators and that even before Harley got around to notifying me that they had the new regulators and they would replace it for me.

Has anyone else experienced this yet?

Yes, on the 2012 & they changed out the regulator & it's been good so far.

I have 2012 and have not had any issues with warning lights or indicators but was having a problem with the reverse breaker tripping all the time. The motor finally went out completely and is being replaced under warranty.

If when you see the engine & battery light come & you look at the volt gage you'll see it's down to about 12 volts, at least that's what mine did & some of the people on the touring forum have had the same problem.

While on our way to the Leesburg this past Friday my engine and battery light came on. Ran until we pulled into Lake Louisa park and turned trike off to pay . With ignition on the volt meter showed 9 volts. Loaded up in my buddy,s toy haul and took it to the cermount Harley where they replace under warranty. They told me Harley was aware of this issue but was not recalling. They had me out in therty minutes. Excellent service.

Clairmont Fl HD is a great place. My neighbors CVO clutch went out and they gave him great service this past weekend.

I have also experienced this problem. first the battery light would come on at around 12 volts, under that the check engine light would come on. Harley shop kept it two days and couldnT find anything wrong, told me to be sure to put a trickle charger on it when not in use. on the way home from the shop it did the same thing again. took it back to shop where it sat for three days before they could check it, sure enough the voltage regulator was bad and they admitted to a problem with them. waited 2 weeks for a replacement regulator. all is working fine now.

I guess I spoke too soon. after posting last week about my vr problem it has failed again. trike ran approx 2000 miles before this one quit. i was lucky enough that i was close to the dealer and rode straight there. on the way it started working and quit twice. the second time it quit i was just pulling into the service department. i had the service manager look at it as the low battery and check engine were both on and showing no charge. they had one in stock, by the time they got around to checking the vr it was working as it shuld. they changed it anyway and all is well. i hope this is the last time for the vr.

The dealer replaced mine at the 1000 mile service last week and so far it seems to be working fine, but time will tell. Now the output seems pretty
high in the 15-16 volt range.

Any more regs going out on the 12 TG's? My dealer looked at me as if I said a dirty word. He told me that people spend too much time on the internet talking to each other making up problems instead of out riding. He tried to convince me that they was not problem with the regs, but they do replace 2-3 a week. He couldn't tell me if they were all 12's. LOL, I called another dealer today and was told yes, they are seeing more than normal regulators failing on the 12's, even one TG recently.

Man with that sarcastic attitude I think I'd be tempted to look for a new dealer/ service dept. & develope a good relationship with them!

I've seen reports of 2 wheel Touring bikes with failed regulators, there has even been one 2011 that I saw which could be a fluke.

I used to get the same song and dance from the parts changers at the dealer I used to do business with. I think they don't like having to deal with an informed consumer.

I'm in Maggie Valley,NC for the Trike Talk Rally, my wife and I just came back from a 100 mile ride over the mountain and my check engine light and my battery light came on several times maybe at least 12 times on our return trip the voltage gage would read 15 volts and then drop to 12 volts and then the check engine light and the battery light would come on, I've got about 1400 miles on this trike so far, it's been to the dealer once for the 1000 mile service and they replaced a rear light wiring harness, under warranty, so it going back to the dealer as soon I get home for a voltage regulator I guess this time,

The regulator went out on my 2012 Electra Glide with the CSC Daytona kit on it last night. Spoke with the service writer there this morning and he said bring it on in. He said it's a problem on the touring bikes.

Went to my dealer today I am having the same problem was spotty but on a 600 k ride today it went on an off like a strobe . What i was told today is that there is a recall out on the VR. hope this helps anyone whose dealer is trying to fake them out

Dropped my 2012 off at the dealer today, the service manager told me there is a recall on the voltage regulators and they had them in stock, I left the trike with them, will pick it up tomorrow. Hope this is the end of problems, getting close to Sturgis, dont need any problems while we're out there.

Got my trike home from the dealer yesterday, new voltage regulator working great so far. Service manager told me they had been replacing the regulators on their new bikes before they were being sold to customers.

Having a dealer tell you we spend too much time on the Internet is ridiculous. In many cases, the forums is where we find out that they are holding out on us. They've known about the VR problem for some time. On a thread I started because I did not know this one was on-going, I mentioned the Check Engine and Battery warning light and that my regulator was also changed. We were returning from Ft Wayne passing through Cincinatti when the lights illuminated. What pisses me off, had the bike quit, I would have been on the road where the temps were 100 degrees. With the information now out, members can check with their dealers to see if their bikes are on the replacement list.
