I just watched a video on how to change the air filter on a 2001-2005 GL1800. After watching the video, I decided when the time comes I will definitely let the dealer do it. I can't believe how many parts have to be removed to replace the air filter. At what intervals do most of you experienced Wing riders change the filter ? Thanks for all your help. I only have 5,000 miles on my Wing.

I HAVE mine changed every 12000 miles. There are a lot of things that are easier to do on a wing than changing the air filter.RIDE SAFE

Same here!!! I also watched that video and immediately decided to pay the dealer to do it. The money spent to have the dealer service the trike was well worth the aggravation factor I'd go through!

I am just about to reach 12000 on mine and will be having the dealer do it. I just go but the schedule maintance in the manuel. At the same time they will be changing oil, changing clutch and brake fluids. They named a few other things.

Wasting your time and money at 12000 (unless you ride in a real dirty area). I changed mine at 20000 and it still looked very clean. That filter's in there so deep even air can't find it. You might also want to change it sooner if your garage is full of mice/rats. I probably won't change mine again till 50,000.

I go with Stephen I changed mine out at 25,000 and it still could have gone awhile longer. If you feel the need for a dealer to do it be prepared. Youll find them charging anywhere from $120.00 to way over $200.00 to do something you can do yourself. Take an evening and get aquainted with your bike, you wont regret it. If youre not sure about some things a digital camera makes for a good memory.

I had just recently bought my trike and I wanted to make sure everything was as it should be inside. I had my dealer do a complete end-to-end servicing. All fluids, all filters and replace anything that was questionable. Yes, it was very expensive but I know I couldn't have done it myself. At least now I have peace of mind and should be good for quite a long time.

Its good when you have a dealer that you can trust. The dealer I bought my trike from did more damage than good to her and from customer complaints and suits finally went out of business. That was Chicago Cycle in Lincolnwood. I have a Honda dealer in the neighborhood. He changed out my front tire for me knowing it was for a trike. He reversed the tire and told me he aired it up to 41psi. Before I left he told me he could fix the dreaded Honda wobble with AllBalls for only so and so price. I thanked him and left. Driving home I all of a sudden had a small wobble at low speeds. Found out he aired the tire to only 35lbs. Heckuva coincidence. Early this spring I took my trike to a Honda dealer that was highly recommended by GWRRA to get the valves checked. A couple of years ago Brian at Niehaus told me to have them checked around 40,000. She had around 43,000. Niehaus unfortunately is 240 miles away. Well the local(30 miles away) dealer checked the valves and put on a new front tire for me. Dealer said the valves were OK but I didnt get any measurements from the check. I didnt like the way the front wheel felt driving home so I pulled my Ring of Fire covers off when I got home. The front axle wasnt lined up correctly on the left side and the bottom bolt of the right kury cover was crossthreaded. If you have a great dealer you can trust God bless him and treat him right. Considering we drive the flagship of Hondas line just the lack of good dealer support makes me think twice about ever buying another wing.

Regarding a Honda dealership that you can trust, I have to say that BlueRidge PowerSports in Harrisonburg, Virginia is top notch! Gary Mork is the service department manager and this guy really knows his motorcycles! He's fair, honest and many times will talk you out of doing something that's not in your best interest and will tell you why. I've used this dealership for my servicing for the past few years and have always come away with a quality job and friendships as well. The entire staff are 100% customer oriented! :10:

IMHO, you would be wasting a good filter and a lot of $$ changing it before 30,000 - 40,000 miles UNLESS you travel on dusty roads. After changing it the first time, you'll get some idea of how long it will last.

Seems like there is two mind sets here.. I side with the "Change When Needed" group. I have gone 45K plus each time because I've had opportunity to have the top shelter off on both 1800s I've owned often enough to inspect the air filter through the air intakes and found them very clean. Once I found a HUGE butterfly spread across the filter. Removing it did not change anything.

This winter I'll do major intermediate maintenance just because it really is time and I'll do the filter again....

Boy reading this thread I am very happy to have two shops I can trust with my GL 1800 Hannigan. One takes care of my Wing, he is Goldwing shop only, the other shop takes care of my Hannigan, they are excellent in what they do, but one at $85 an hour a little pricey! But, I am sure in large cities, $85 an hour is cheap. But, as long as they are good at what they do, peace of mind and safety is everything. ThumbUp

I don't figure my dealer will see much of my 2012 GL1800 unless its warranty related. I have the tools, service manual and Fred Harman's complete DVD set.

I wish there were a few knowledgeable Wing owners near my location. I'd love to visit when they're servicing their trikes/bikes. Manuals are one thing but I've always learned better and faster while watching others perform the tasks. It's also a great way to spend the time helping out others while learning at the same time. :)

I opted to replace the air filter my self, being an 07 and the third owner history was questionable. Oh and did I mention there are a lot of dusty roads up our way. I bought the manual previously and it has paid for itself already for the work Ive done so far.pepper It was quite time consuming (4hrs) to get it all back with the new filter installed. A little intimidating around the time disconnecting the wiring assemblies and all but as mentioned by an earlier poster the camera came out and it was no problem at all.
