brake noise

Good Afternoon, I have a noise problem that I don't think King Solomon can solve. On my 08 Stallion when I apply brakes there is a noise in the front brake. It is a metallic clicking that is in sync with the speed of the machine. It will only make the noise after I have ridden it for a couple of miles. We have replaced the brake shoes, checked all the post that goes thru the rotors and the clipes holding them on, checked everything for visible signs of metal hitting metal with no luck. It is not a "rattle", it is a clicking-poping sound while applying the brakes. I have 2 brother-in-laws that have been Ford mechanics for 30+ years and they are walking around the machine scratching their head.
It started very subtlety about 600 miles ago and is getting louder.
Also, I talked with Richard @ Throughbred Motorsports and he had never heard of this.
Thanks in advance.

there is no Ford dealer that can find this unless he is a good mechanic, NONE of the parts are Ford. except for the steering wheel its self, there are NO Ford parts on the front wheel or the forks.
get back to TBMS or one of there dealers.

There are bearings on the plate that hold the calibers that have gone bad on sveral Stallions. This plate is the outer one that you see on the wheel. The dust shields on those bearings for some reason breaks down exposing the bearings. Give them a look.

you need to talk to nick....i know that right now he is back on the road.....richard is nicks asst. in training somewhat....he don't know all that nick knows, i'd keep trying to get in touch with nick.

Oddoman

ODDOMAN is correct, Richard is one of the lead mechanics for the trike conversions, not the Stallion.
the outer bearings on the front wheel are for the black plates that holds the brake calibers,
the seal will come out and the ball bearings will be exposed, this has happened several times on the 43,000+ miles on my Stallion.

the actual wheel bearings are roller bearings and can not be seen unless you remove the axle, these bearings are NOT sealed and take lots of grease.

I know this because I changed the front tire at 23,700 miles. if you change the front wheel and DO NOT remove the black brackets for the brake calibers you can not balance the front wheel unless you use something like DYNA BEADS. another thing you should do when you change the front wheel is to re-pack the grease on the roller bearings, the grease that TBMS uses is Chevron blue grease, don't know the name just that the color is blue and it is from Chevron.

I just bought a 2008 stallion and having a metal on metal noise in the front when i apply the brakes. The owner told me it was just brake noise, but brakes shouldnt make noise. looking for some ideas!

check the bearing in the brake caliper plate. These are the ones that can be seen from just looking at the front wheel. You might see the bearings without the dust shield covering them. If so replace those bearings.

Hi Jdrooster,
I had the same noise on my 2010 Stallion. It sounded like a ball ping hammer hitting when the brakes were applied. I wanted to wait until I got it back from my dealer before I posted this. He rode it around and finally heard the sound. YEA. He said he had never heard this sound before on one.
He took it apart and replaced the "Swing Arm Bearings" They were bad. Don't know why this made the noise but that is what fixed mine....Just got it back on 11-3-11...

Here are some pictures of the Location of the Swing Arm Bearing..
The Bearing on mine had bad places in them, and they would not roll...
I hope this helps....

Cupcake were you there for the repair? Did it take long? Was this bearing a standard bearing that might be able to be purchased locally? Just fact gathering in case. Thanks

Hi Gorilla,
No I was not there for the repair. He did show us the old bearings when we got there. They had places in them that would not let them turn.
Don't think it would be too hard to drop the Swing Arm. If you have a local business that deals in bearings, I'm sure that they would not be too hard to find.
Thomas Riley @ Riley's Bike and Trike in Mebane N.C. is who did mine.
Great Guy.
