Looking for recommendations and/or opinions on whether it is worth the cost ($150) to update the map on my unit. Currently running NA-MY2015 and MY2018 is available. Seems like in three years there would be some significant updates but can't find any information on what the upgrade contains. Anyone done this......

I find my Garmin 660 which is updated twice a year to be more accurate and I updated the Boombox in 2017.

Not a lot of new roads being built nowdays

Unless you are in an area that has several smaller road or intersections that have been built or changed, I would not expect much of a difference.

There are not a lot of truly new roads being build from dirt to concrete or asphalt these days, I69 in Indiana is the biggest new construction in recent years and most of the truly new build is complete. Your 2015 maps may not include the part that has completed thus far.

With that said the remainder of I69 is still being built adding bridges and ramps that would not be on the maps until complete and I believe the estimated completion date is not until at least 2020 which has been pushed out a few times already.

There is always intersection changes, smaller road work, and new subdivision/shopping area roads that may not be on older maps.

When I run into those I switch to my phone and google maps to get me through.

It is really up to you whether to update or not but I will probably wait until I69 is complete as I live in southern Indiana and would use it on occasion.

My maps are also MY2017

Thanks for your input Bob, not too concerned with road info - I realize there probably are not many road updates to consider, but rather wondering if POI info would have changed much in three years ? I will be taking a trip around Lake Superior this year and facilities are few and far between up there.

Last thing I need is a fuel stop shown that is now closed. :gah:

Did some research on map versions and discovered the updates contain map data that is at least two years old. In other words, the MY2015 map I have installed is 2013 data and the MY2018 update is 2016 data. Not surprised, even Garmin maps are never current. At any rate, three years of new data seem to me to be worth considering an update so I just may proceed.

Have never and will never pay for an update. In the 10 or 12 years I've had a Garmin(only GPS I'll ever buy), I have never had a problem getting to my destination or finding a POI.

$150 is criminal in my opinion. If I was you, I wouldn't worry about it, but if you have $150 burning a hole in your pocket, well............?

The H-D GPS is (2014) is a POS. It has 6 wrong Harley dealers that I know of. Don't know if they've corrected them or not - I use my Zumo 660 80% of the time and 100% on my long distance trips.

My Garmin updates are free now, they didn't use to be back in the day.

Good luck

The Dealer POIs are updated periodically (free) and there have been several since the 2014 model year.

I own two Garmin units and have free updates on them but those maps are generally a year or two behind also. I have had instances of wrong POI information in my travels around the country even with them. That is a fact of life with any GPS unit since businesses come and go. Since I have a built-in nav system on my ride, don't think I need to mount one of my Garmins. I have had no issues with the Boom Box nav unit, it gets me where I want to go......ThumbUp

Update: Installed new map database today and I must say it was easier than I was led to believe from some forum posts I had read. Updated my maps from MY2015 to MY2018 which yes did cost me $150 but also contained 600 mb more data and I'm sure corrected some outdated info. :clapping:

Using the Naviextras toolbox (free download) I purchased the update, downloaded it to a flash drive with the boom box fingerprint loaded on it, then simply plugged the drive into the USB connector on the radio and the update automatically installed.
ThumbUp

If you are talking about the Navco MY2018 vs the NA MY2018, you need to pick the version that is loaded on your unit currently. Don't know the specific differences between the two but when I checked my boom box it said I had the NA version so that's what I bought. The Navco version is $10 more for some reason.

Upon further investigation, I find the Navco map is the CVO version which contains more POI data.
