Best Insurance for Your Trike

I don't know of any trike specific companies.
I have State Farm and have been with them for over 30 years.
While talking with my agent the owner too.
I wasn't instilled with great confidence if or when a claim may occur.
The bike is fully covered. The trike part??
The way it was explained to me they take an average of what your year and model is selling for and then determine from there whether to repair it or pay you at the local going rate outright.
In other words bang up the trike part bad enough. Odds are all Im getting is a check.
I hope that isn't correct and I never have to find out.

I have AllState, no complaints with them, I know I will never get what I have into it, just the way it is when you add that big accessary on the rear and then some. Think that's pretty much with any Ins Co., might be different if Honda actually made a trike.

Do a search on insurance and you will find a lot of postings on the subject. Many companies write trikes. Most do conversions as an accessory. Many have different rates from state to state. Shop around.

I have my 08 1800 Roadsmith insured thru Progressive. The Bike is covered for what it is, but the Kit is insured as an accessory. I insured it as an agreed value
and if it gets totaled I get the full insured value instead of Book value. Pricey, but
I think worth it.

They are all great until you have an accident. Find one that pays. Plus that is helpful if they have adjusters who have actually settled motorcycle claims

Post-accident experience with insurance company. Caution: rant alert.

Caution: Long post. I apologize in advance.

We were in a terrible wreck with injuries in July. My motorcycle insurance was with Liberty Mutual, as they had the best rates for our cars (I have young adult daughters who are very expensive to insure) so I purchased a policy for our GL1800. I added one endorsement to the policy called Better Bike Replacement, which is supposed to provide cash for a motorcycle one year newer with 2500 less miles. Current mileage: 1600.

I am in a nightmare. My sales guy is awesome.....even the claims examiner is pleasant, BUT the subcontractors that they are using are awful. An appraiser was called in once it was determined that the cost to repair was over 22K. That took two weeks. Then two more weeks for him to turn in his report. Then they use Auto Source to determine two things. 1. The Value of my bike and 2. The Value of an identical bike one year newer. This has been two more weeks.

I caught so many mistakes by Auto Source. The concerns that YOU have that insurance companies don't know how to handle motorcycle claims is absolutely correct. The sub contractor simply got on the internet and pulled the lowest prices they could find. The first base value bike supposedly had an airbag package, so they deducted for it. When I called the dealership, I learned that it didn't have that package at all, it was my bike (Audio Comfort Navi).....Oh and the "identical" bike one year newer? The first bike chosen was Audio Comfort only. OK - caught you....fix it......The 2nd bike chosen was a dealer 3 hours away had a mistake on his website, listed a 2014 at the 2013 price, and then was an A** to me on the phone when I asked him if that bike was actually available. Really? (Sigh.) Then the examiner had two deductibles charged instead of one. It just goes on and on. I literally sent 10 e-mails yesterday, mostly about the mistakes in the "offer". The "offer" has gone up approximately $1,000 per day since I started calling the dealerships to verify information. I just want Auto Source to do their job, but hey, I've never made $1,000 per day at a job.....so......I just continue to verify.

So getting Better Bike sounds great, doesn't it? Unfortunately I did not read my policy carefully. We've always been with Progressive on our 750 Honda. Other companies offer "Safety Gear" coverage and "Custom Equipment" on their policies. Liberty Mutual? Nope. I have $500 of coverage on "Custom Equipment". Yup, $500. It was a Tow Pac E-Trike. Not covered at all. The body man said that the surface cracks from the accident can't be painted over, since they will come back anyway - and I am not "selling" my Tow Pac to them for $500 (she said it was an option...). Other custom equipment - The pegs, the back rest, the trike kit, the hitch, the special wiring. All of it. Not covered. They offered $40 for one Kurakyn peg. (hell, no.) They also don't cover labor on custom equipment, so you know all that time I spent putting the equipment on (before I was injured)? Yep, I had to take it all off at my expense, and will have to re-install at my expense.

I asked Liberty Mutual if they would cover our $78.00 boots, which looked like they have been put on a bench grinder. Nope.....we'll cover new toes, but not new boots. Wow. Helmets? No again.

I called Foremost (Since I am now a proud AARP member) and they offered all sorts of goodies - but no "better bike". Once we finalize our numbers, we'll see if the equipment coverage is better than the better bike coverage. After we figure that out, we'll take a hard look at changing companies. Thank heavens we were not at fault - Foremost indicated that it would not affect our premiums which were similar.

So - bottom line. My bad for not reading the policy carefully. I'll own that. Lesson learned. I'll probably buy a 2013 bike and use the extra better bike portion on new fenders or the new 14" kit from Tow Pac. The old kit undercarriage is still perfect - it sustained no damage except for the Adjustment Lock bolt. Just the fenders have irreversible fiber cracks through the paint.

There is more, but I won't bore you with more. I've gone long enough and I am hoarse from ranting. Will look forward to healing both body and spirit.

From what i've read here in numerous posts and what I have is enough accessory coverage for the trike part usually 8-10K.Seems to be the way most insurance companies deal with it.Obviously not needed with rigs like the Triglide.

After having my trike for 30 days State Farm told me they would not insure my Goldwing trike because they considered it a altered motorcycle. I went with Rider Insurance. As long as they have your trike kit listed on their list you are fully covered . There list covers all of the major trike kits, if its not one of those they then cover your kit as accessories .
Check with Rider.

I use Dairyland, they insure the bike and trike kit sperately.bike + trike kit+ accessories.
They cut my bike insurance bill in half with better coverage.

Not in Florida :(

Keep in mind, insurance rules and rates vary greatly from state to state. One company may write policies in one state and not in others. It is important check your state and your state insurance commission can often help.

My main insurance company just flatly told me they didn't insure trikes when I asked them to. When I asked why, they mentioned altered motorcycles. I then told them I had a new Harley tri glide which is built as a trike from the ground up. He then gave me a crazy high price for it. I told him to stick it, and went with progressive.

What's sad is, the company I have everything else with, I've been with for 32 years now. They used to be the best there was. Not so much now.

After a stage 1 kit and *ahem* other stuff...me too.

We insured our Boss Hoss trike with Progressive and their rates were far and away better than anyone else. ($300yr) Our coverage lapsed with them after we sold that trike, obviously, but when we bought our Street Glide bike,we got our insurance with them, again.
$357/yr was what were paying for the bike. After the trike conversion, now they want over $650yr (Street Glide + $20K accessory coverage) and have scheduled an inspection of our trike, today. I've built dozens of high-end custom bikes and cars without one of them ever requiring anything other than photos so you can imagine my skepticism.

$57/month for my '15 TG. Only $3K accessory coverage with progressive. Sounds to me like you're getting a really good deal. Be skeptical and take it!

Insurance

Be carful of what insurance you have. I had State farm for years then someone said to check on passenger coverage for injuries. None Can't add any. So changed insurance

Claim settled

Our check arrived late today via UPS for our replacement bike. I agree with mgw, you don't know what the ins and outs of your insurance are, until you have a claim. At least in Michigan (no fault) we had an awful time. Here are some highlights:

Liberty Mutual
Cons:
1. $500 coverage for customized equipment (depreciated), no safety equipment coverage. Customized equipment can get endorsed for higher premiums.
2. Subcontractors were awful. Just awful. Appraiser, Auto Source and even the Tow guy were unprofessional and slow. Major mistakes made by Auto Source!!!
3. Knowledge base on motorcycles was non-existent.
4. Better Bike replacement coverage is limited to 120% of bike value. In our case, this meant $3,000 less than true replacement.
5. Phone system was atrocious.
6. Claims reps had conflicting information. Total Loss department is not integrated into the Claims department, and is not available in the evenings.
Pros:
1. Rates were competitive.
2. Better Bike replacement is a good feature. Not many companies have it.
3. Claims process, while clunky, was effective. Examiner was pleasant.
4. Mistakes that I found were corrected quickly. Examiner seemed embarrassed.
5. Once a settlement was agreed upon, check arrived in two days.
6. Total time from accident to settlement - 42 days. Unacceptable.

In Michigan we cannot sue for uninsured items. You must know what your coverages are.

We switched to Foremost AARP for the replacement bike. Same premium, better coverage for things we didn't think about. The downside is that Liberty would put our bike in true storage (no liability) for a month. Foremost will only reduce it. Checked Geico, Riders, Dairyland and Progressive but Foremost won the business.

Concentrating on recovery and rebuilding now.....and very glad that the check arrived. Those Goldwings ain't cheap....

Clint, sounds like they're charging you an auto rate, since the NADA and KBB show value for the Tri Glide as a unit, not value of the bike plus accessories.

Seems that the Street Glide plus conversion (whichever that was) should price out at about $300 per year, like the rest of us are paying for full coverage.

Of course, I live in Florida, and everything here is about 30 degrees off center from your normal sightline. "Normal" is one of the settings on my clothes washer, other than that I've not seen it yet.
