Was at my harley dealer today and picked up oil and filter for my 2018 harley triglide, wow prices are thru the roof, $13.99 a quart for regular, $19.99 for oil filter. I may in the future just go to walmart and pick up oil, way cheaper for 20w50 for conventional.

I priced a battery while there, egads, $230 for a damm battery, I still have the orginal battery in the bike, I know things have went up in price but this is getting out of hand.

Has anybody bought another kind of battery that works good and it is cheaper with the same bolt up style???

I run Lucas 20-50 Motorcycle oil and I pay$10 a quart from Rual King, I use Battery Plus batteries with a 2-year warranty. Last one bought was 2 years ago and it was $149. All of these items have probably increased in price also. The wife wanted a new pair of riding glasses, so we went to the HD shop because they had a 75% off sale on them. Holly s%#@ the original price was $212, nope not today.

I put a new battery in my freewheeler last summer and it was about that price. I went with a Harley battery only because I saw online that the size is a little weird and I’d save only $10/20. As far as oil I just went online an ordered the tune up kit for a M8 with all the fluids for a 3 hole. Probably should look into other brands lol

There was just another thread about motorcycle batteries for HD’s with a couple thoughts.

I’ll still purchase the OEM HD oil filter but I won’t buy their oil.

I’m not recommending any oil (don’t want to ignite an oil thread), but for myself I’m a big Valvoline fan and is what I’ve used in all my high performance V8 motors I’ve built since high school.

Wally World has 20W50 Valvoline Motorcycle dino for $6.37 or Valvoline Motorcycle Full Synthetic for $7.67. I use the Full Synthetic in the motor.

For the other 2 holes, I really like Belray oils. Big Twin Trans, Primary Chaincase.

I use Luca primary oil and Belray in the transmission.

This is a 500 amp Interstate battery in Canada for harley. You can get lower grade 400 amp batteries for a little over CAD$200. The USD price seems high and on par with CAD$ prices but it might be the HD premium. I have had good service from interstate batteries.

On the Battery, I always use DEKA. (They actually makes the HD battery). There’s a small Mom & Pop shop near me that is a distributor for DEKA and have great luck with them.

In the oil, as mentioned, is quite the controversial subject that will never end. Everyone are fans of what they like, prefer and use.

But since you mentioned oil and open for suggestions, this is what I like:
I am a believer of Amsoil and because of that I am also a Amsoil “Customer Preferred” account holder. Great oil and good price….
This year I’m putting Belray in the trans.
(I put it in my Son’s Dyna and he could tell a difference).

As far as oil filters, I want chrome, so HD is cheapest at that $20.00 cost and I have no issues with their filters. (Amsoil is more expensive at: $23.15 for their chrome, although Black is only $10.40).

Anyways, just yesterday I did my “3 holes” as I am getting ready for this riding season…. So for me, this is my current lineup:

Ultra Lube SAE 20 W 50 Full Synthetic 4T Vtwin Engine oil API SL JASO. 5 gallon pail from the refinery, delivered to your door off fleabay. Like lobster check for market price. There's no magic elixer. Stop making the Madison Avenue Marketeers rich. Oh..they have the gear oil also. Oil filter? Don't be a rube. They are laughing at you. See DK Customs remote oil filter mount and reusable filter. GYZ32HL Platinum 500CCA from Battery Mart $180.00 ( 2021 price) still goin strong.

Before anyone asks, the Belray Hypoid Gearsaver oil and the Belray Big Twin Transmission oil are the same. I asked Belray before I switched to their oils and their email back said “They are the same product, just different packaging “.

I always use an OEM filter as I’ve seen too many engine warranties denied over the years because of using a filter that supposedly doesn’t meet specs.

GYZ32HL battery is the YUASA battery found in many other OEM powersport mfg’s other than Harley that I spoke about in the other thread.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I will go with the Duracell battery from batteries plus, 2 year warranty and Duracell is made by east penn that makes the harley batteries from what I could find out. That will save me around $60 buying this Duracell. I also may go to this other place and see if they can get me a Deka battery, their website doesn't show it and it is located in my town.

Last battery I bought I did some shopping and the Harley battery was around 20 bucks more money. I've always gotten 5 years out of the Harley battery, so I stick with them. As I recall it was around 175 though. For oil, Mobil 1 or Harley synthetic, same for filter. I've used 20w50 in the past, but I may try straight 50 for the summer. Anybody else use straight 50 in the hot summer?

I run straight 50 in my 17 trike.

speaking of oil has anyone tried aviation piston engine oil? These engines are predominately air cooled from 4,000 hp to 90 hp. Here is a chart showing readily available grades. The W grade is AD and Viscosity ratings are roughly double that of automotive.

Don`t use aviation engine oil in a motorcycle.

Aircraft engine oils have much different requirements than automotive engines.

Just because it is used for aircraft does not mean it is better, and in the case of motor oil, it is not as good.

A major brand 20w50 automotive oil is a much better choice.

Says the company who makes them!!!
I also work in the automation industry and we sell robotics and pneumatics to East Penn.
(…. Who also makes the battery FOR Harley Davidson).
You posted the response, but you never linked or gave credit to the source, that is why I asked.

You are certainly getting your moneys worth out of that original battery James! On my current 2019 Trike I replaced the original in 2021 and again in 2023. The 2021 battery came from Batteries Plus and was $199. My current one came from my Harley dealer and was $217 (that was after 10% vet discount).

As far as the oil goes, can't help you there. My mechanic told me to only use Shaeffers so I'm ordering a case at a time to the tune of $13.40 a quart on Amazon Prime. You can use Amazon to get oil filters for just over $11. I bought a bag of O-rings that contained at least 100 of them for maybe under $7 on Amazon also.

I swear if it wasn't for using Shaeffers lubricants I could do my 3 hole changes for under $75.00!!!!

Trampas,

I just got a new battery from BatteryMart. Big Crank for my 2016 TriGlide. $136. Free shipping. Arrived at my house in Illinois 18 hours later. My third battery from these folks. Absolutely no complaints. Trump would buy his batteries here!
