in australia, appart from statutory holidays like xmas and easter etc, we get 4 weeks annual leave (payed holidays). how does that compare to your situation, and does it vary from state to state or industry to industry?? a lot of people we spoke to said they only got 2 weeks, which doesnt leave a lot of time to do a big overseas trip. our holidays accrue as you work, and can be saved up but a lot of employers dont like you having more than 6 weeks owing.

Every company offers different vacation time here. The more years, the more weeks. To a point. I'm only allowed to carry over 3 weeks myself. Usually I do a big trip every other year.

here its generally 4 weeks from year 1 and at 10 years service you get a 1 off extra of 10 weeks

Vacations vary greatly from profession to profession. VERY few workers in the US get more than 4 weeks paid vacation and that is after 15-20 yrs of service. and millions get much less. It totally depends on the business and often time whether unions are involved or not. Most industries got away from defined pension plans for employees starting in the 1980's and many went to 401K plans. Saved businesses a ton of money but didn't help employees much in the long run. Now city and state pension plans are going broke because of the generous benefits they gave away during the good times and a shrinking tax base to pay for them, plus lousy return on investments and fund managers who are taking pension plans to the cleaners. With many industries outsourcing everything to Taiwan and India, things aren't going to get much better.

Had four weeks vacation after 16 years plus 11 paid holidays with the city. Started at a Texaco Refinery in 1971, shut It down in 1986, had 4 weeks vac. Traveled on construction for 5 years, lived in different cities. Worked 2 years for a Power Plant when they shut it down. Worked in a garbage incinerator for 2 years in Indy, Opened Refinery back up so I went back home got 4 weeks vac. again. Closed refinery after 5 years, went to work for the city. I am finally retired, everyday a vacation!! :gah:

I've been civil service for 20 years
Accrue 8 hrs a pay period
Can only carry fwd 240 hours at end of year
So, I accrue about 5 weeks a year I have to use, or lose, plus 240 hours banked, or sell when i retire.
(this is all after I did 25 years active duty military)
gonna work 2 more years and scoot into the sunset

When I worked for General Motors. We had 4 weeks plus one week for sick call in's. Plus I used to get unpaid leave of absent. If I ran out before Sturgis ThumbUp

I get 1 week a year selling auto parts and no paid sick time.I can roll over 1 week vacation but they don't want us saving up a bunch of extra time.

Being a REALTOR I get no paid vacation. But can take off when I want to.

As you can see, from job to job it varies. I get 2 weeks now and 3 sick and 3 personnel, I think. Well, It doesn't matter anymore now....I get laid off Monday the 30th!
Really not that happy. But, my career's have about run their course; Dental prostehtics 30+ yrs, medical assisting including instructing and CPR instructor which is what I will do after layoff through next yr. Then...Retire
