Alternator replacement

I have been having to replace the battery in my 2005 GW 3 in four years. Took it to the shop. They said I needed a new alternator. My question is how often does the alternator need to be replaced. Have any of you guys replaced your alternator?

I've owned 9 Wings and never had an issue EXCEPT that the 1984 1200 had a stator problem. I think most Wing owners would say that problems are rare.

A friend of mine on an 02 wing had his alternator fail at 85,000 miles. Guessing yours is in that same mileage neighborhood. The dealer that replaced his said he has been doing a lot of 1800 wings in the 75,000 to 90,000 range..

Don't think 3 to 4 years is bad on batteries these days. RIDE SAFE

Not sure but I think he meant to say 3 batteries in a 4 year time period. If that is the case, I'd agree with his concern (depending on where he buys his batteries)

I had the alternator replaced on my 1997 Aspencade the year after I bought it in 2011 with only 15,000 miles on the bike. The previous owner had only ridden the bike 3,000 miles in the last 10 years at that point. It hasn't given me any trouble since. (Knock on wood) I know there are different opinions on battery minders but I keep one plugged into my battery all winter. I start it occassionally when the snow clears enough that I can open the shed door.

Make sure it is not just the brushes. Mine went at 36,000 and it was sticking. $25.00 fixed it. 30,000 miles later and still pushing 13.7 volts.

1992 replaced alternator at 65,000 miles. 2002 alternator out at about 50,000 miles. Both died while on a ride. 92 died on the way to work one morning, all of a sudden everything started shutting down until the bike died. 02 was on the way home one night when I noticed the lights seemed dim and looked at the gauge and saw it was down to 10 volts and shortly after it died. So, alternator could need replacing. Most GW riders I talk to around here don't make it more than 75,000 miles on the OEM alternator. Just MHO.
