After using reverse

** Sorry wrong location ** . 2003 GL1800/Roadsmith Trike. After using reverse (works well), then when moving forward in 1st gear, engine bogs down (valve rattle), feels like starter motor is still engaged? After a start/stop all is well. One suggestion was to let trike move a little after using reverse to let drive gear on starter exit ring gear. But if bike is in neutral I don't think ring gear will be moving?

I have found that on my '06 Roadsmith (not that kit has anything to do with it) I need to wait a few seconds after engaging/disengaging reverse to let things finish moving. For instance, when I push the reverse to back up, I wait a few seconds after the reverse light comes on before pushing the starter button to begin backing up. Conversely, when turning reverse off I wait two or three seconds before putting bike in gear to move forward. Problems seem to occur more during cold weather or when engine is cold. Think it takes a little time for all the moving parts to complete their journey. :)

My experience is the same as Mike's in the above comment, good advice there. I have no hard facts, just intuition, but the reverse operates off the starter, the starter is subject to wear and failure if mistreated, so I treat it very carefully and use it only when absolutely necessary. Think about it, you have more weight with the conversion, so engaging the reverse is working harder than it was designed with just two wheels. Just my thoughts, I know there are others that think differently and I respect that.

This is a real shot in the dark but try it.. I make a practice of doing it a couple times each year.

Remove the right side engine cover (the one you remove to check oil). Just above the rear brake master cylinder there is a large spring. Wash that sucker down with spray silicone real good while activating and deactivating reverse. Road dirt, dust, and grime builds up on that mechanism... It may cure the problem. At the very least it will wash out the crud.. :xszpv: :xszpv:

Hope that helps.
