Wanted to start a new thread on this, what has been an interesting journey so far.

It started when I though service and parts installs was taking too long and ended up yesterday when an oil line that had just been installed at the dealership blew off as I approached home (30 miles from the dealer)

I went out to start the bike this morning to take back to the dealer to let them wash off all the oil, and turned the radio before starting. It looks like there are bigger issues than a little oil on the bike. The engine now sounds like a sewing machine (a rather loud one at that). Sounds like lifters to me, but what do I know?

When I spoke to the service writer last night, he assured me that their couldn’t have been any damage done to the engine, because the light was designed to come on before that…..I went out this morning and followed my oil track and could see where the line blew off. The line that blew off was the one returning oil to the engine and The trail was over a mile long to the point where the light came on. This tells me that there was NO oil being pumped into the engine for at least a mile before the light came on.(Edit) Thinking more on this, it may or may not be true....It was the line that returning oil to the oil filter adapter (where the filter used to be). Where is the filter in the oiling system of the M8? Does the filtered oil go to the engine or return to the tank?

I am waiting for them to open now to call him. We’ll see how he wants to handle this. I’m sure he’s not going to want to buy a brand new engine, but as far as I can see, that is the only way to make me whole on this. Less than 1000 on the trike……..

Sorry to hear about your engine situation with your new trike.

Hopefully you checked out the oil levels, took photos of the damaged areas and had the bike towed into the dealer.

If you do not get complete satisfaction from the dealer, then insist that the regional manager get involved with initiating 100% complete total repairs/replacement.

Please keep us posted.

Here is the link from a recent thread that you posted yesterday about this issue:

Hopefully, Your dealer has Error's and Omissions insurance....Or this is going to get interesting real fast...

UPDATE

Just got back from the dealership. They came and got it and I drove down. I hung out for a couple of hours. They said the ticking is a lifter, which is what I thought it was. They have the lifters in stock and say they will have it fixed, cleaned, and brought back to me tomorrow. We'll see. After having some cool down time, I figure if the lifters fixes it and it is quiet, all is well. This dealer provides a lifetime powertrain warranty on every bike they sell. The only requirement is to have all fluid changes done on time at a legitimate service facility. I plan on that anyway, I can't do my own anymore.....

Oh no!HELL NO!

I dunno, that is what we call an oil out

If it were me I would want a second opinion

Never good when you lose that much oil

I would want a NEW engine and a free Loaner JMO

Good Luck to you;)

IF there is no other internal damage caused by basically running the engine "dry" of oil, that just goes to show the benefits of running a synthetic oil under today's real world conditions!
One of synthetic oil's many benefits is the ability to seep into metal & its "cling" properties. :clapping:

I'll always use full synthetics in every internal combustion engine that I own, and promote its usage to anyone that'll listen...;)

Luckily for you the warranty is there as your "safety blanket" if the engine suffered any undiagnosed damage they might not have found, so far.

Sounds like a tech might not have done an install correctly? Feel free to call or write....would not want them to fix or replace and make the same mistake again.

You may get lucky. HD motors are pretty tolerant of oil thanks to roller bearings. The noise is loose valve clearance due to lifter pump down and MIGHT go away if you let it run for a few minutes at about 1500 rpm with no load. Or it might not, You may have wiped out the cam. But it's worth a try. A bro changed his oil in Virginia before heading for Daytona and forgot to refill! He made it all the way into South Carolina before it started seizing. He let it cool off, filled it with oil, and rode it two more years. Prayer might help ...;)

Well, the lifters have been replaced and there is still a noise. They are now taking top end apart. I will be going to look at the parts myself when it is torn down.

Sorry to hear that

The top end surely must have suffered being the lifters did not help

Hoping the piston jets are not ruined

UPDATE--Top end apart and I saw the parts

Well, the top end and the cam chest are apart and I got a look at the parts myself. Cylinders and pistons had some very minor scoring, cam appeared OK, tech said oil pump OK, but I honestly wouldn't know what to look for. The pan was dropped and no shavings in the oil or on the plug. In an attempt to turn a negative into a positive, I will be getting a Stage III kit for a deeply discounted price for the parts only.

That's good to hear the dealer is stepping up & taking good care of you.

What's the name of the dealer your using so others in the area can use them?
