***2018-24 Safety Recall Fuel Pump***

From what I am seeing recently, all the 2018 and 2019's will need the recall done. Only some of the 2020's will need it done. If you have a 2020 that was built after Sept all the way to the 2024, you will not need the recall done. You can actually do the check at home to find out. Here is the service bulletin:

If you happen to be one of the lucky ones, I still recommend contacting your Honda dealer so they can get it in their computer showing the inspection was done. Some may only require you to provide a photo of your pump showing the data plate while others will still want to physically see the plate. The good news is that means a fairly quick visit to get it done. But if yours is subject to the recall, it best to find out beforehand because if the dealer confirms you need the recall work done, they will not let you drive out of there as it's a safety issue.

But I have been seeing that more and more pumps are starting to show up at the dealers. However, some are doing the recalls to bikes they have in stock first because Honda won't allow them to be sold with the old fuel pump so they are just taking up valuable space.

I took our 2018 Honda Goldwing DCT Tour with CSC Encore Trike Kit to Scottsdale on Tuesday and had them install the new fuel pump. Mechanic said they have done 12 so far and he has done 6 himself. Took about an hour and everything went smooth. He gave me a plastic bag with some plastic crud/items in it that was in the fuel pump. I will post a couple pics below if possible. He said in the other 11 fuel pumps, he didn't find anything in them, so mine was the first. Took it for a hundred mile ride up to Heber yesterday, and noticed quite a bit more power and now wondering IF those plastic items were plugging the pump somewhat? I asked him if he thought they were from the extra tank from the Encore Trike kit or from the pump. He said they were from the pump, would be his guess. Western Honda Powersports in Scottsdale did the work. They have 2 White and Black Goldwing Tours with DCT and one dark colored one in a manual if anyone is looking for one.

Thanks for sharing this John, and WOW!

I'm pretty certain that non of that material came from CSCs auxillary fuel tank, certainly not the larger clear plastic pieces. If it all came from Honda's fuel pump it is a LOT of material. I'm wondering what kind of pump failure would produce so much debris? Whatever it was would certainly justify a recall.

Yep, I just read that the early pump assemblies had materials (the jointed plastic hose) that aparrently were not gas impervious, broke down and were sucked into the pump and chewed up, destroying the pump.

I should add, after they changed my fuel pump and found all that plastic garbage inside the old pump, I couldn't believe the difference in power, before and after. A world of difference, especially when hitting the throttle to pass a vehicle or going up a big hill. So those plastic pieces were stopping my gas flow somewhat.

Did you take it to the dealer knowing you had a problem or was it an inspection for this issue?

I received a recall notice from Honda Corporation back in May. I visited my dealer and they ordered the parts when they became available. Then the service manager called me and said they were ready to perform the recall replacement. I took in it last Thursday and it took about an hour to perform.

Unlike BrokenBackJack's findings, my mechanic did not find any plastic residue (I specifically asked about it after seeing the pic BrokenBackJack posted), and I didn't notice any power change

I got the notice in May and called my local Honda dealer where I've always gone. New service writer, said I couldn't wait and had to leave it. Wanted VIN number. When I gave it to him he said he needed to call me back. Never did. Went to Honda in Fairfield Ohio. Got an appointment in 2 weeks, waited on the bike repair that only took 45 minutes and was treated like gold. Lesson learned,, the service writer can make or break a business.

Why not call Maw Honda in California and let them know about the encounter you had with piss poor service writer as well as the Owner of the said dealership?

Honda Corp nor Local dealership can fix poor personnel performance. If you got reasonable service in the past it might be worth a try. You never know when you may need to use them in the future.

I had a chat with Maw Honda in California, and it made a big difference in nipping issues in the bud with my GW Honda Power Sports Dealer; they even had the District Service manager swing by to get things squared away. When you spend $$$ on these GWs and let them know, of course, with decency, it goes a long way to resolving issues.
