2009 triglide Trans. noise

I have a 2009 Triglide that I bought with 3900 miles. The trans has a fairly loud whining noise when it is in 5th or 3rd gear. It is loud enough in 5th that I hate to run it very long. I took it the the local HD dealer shortly after I bought it and they said it was the nature of the trans. Is anyone having the same problem? Thks, Chuck

I have to exact opposite with my transmision. Its noisey ( has a loose gear sound ) when the engine is running at idle and quiet when riding.

Depending on what gear oil is in your transmission you could try a heavier gear oil. Redline Oil makes a Shockproof 75/250wt gear oil that I run that works very well ( Looks like pepto bismol ) >> Red Line Synthetic Oil - Gear Oil for Differentials

Another oil you can try that is a very good gear oil is Amsoil severe gear 75/140 oil. >> AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lube - Gear Oil

Harley says you can run that Syn 3 in the engine, primary and transmission. I wouldnt personally but that is my opinion.

You should hear a noticable difference in the whine you hear if you change to one of these gear oils

09 has the 5th gear whine. I thought something was wrong at first, but no, that is the way it is. It gets better with mileage. I can still hear it if I really listen and I like my 5th gear whine. I can tell what gear I am in, as I ride in that gear a lot.

The 09s had a square cut 5th gear. They tend to whine. One of the big changes for all Harley Touring bikes in 10 was a helical cut 5th gear. It was redesigned to eliminate the gear whine.

Thks guys, they started using HD syn 3 when we did the 5000 mile change and check. I now have 13000 miles and it seems to be louder then it was when I first got it. Guess I'll change to one of the suggested oils. Thks, chuck

Do you run the gear oil in the Trans. and the primary? The guy that's doing the Trans. sprocket change is a Amsoil dealer, so that what I'll try. Thks, Chuck

Part of the problem with the gearbox noise is that you don't have the radio turned up high enough :D:D

I've got 22,000 miles on my '09, and it does seem like the noise is getting less as the gears wear into each other. OR maybe I"m just getting used to it. My dealer recommends Harley Syn in all holes. I've done this with the last 3 bikes I've owned and haven't had a problem.

Good Luck!

Redline Shockproof Heavy....read-up on it. But one thing is for sure...I would never run motor oil in a gearbox. Ask yourself.....would you pour the same oil that goes in the motor of your Porsche into it's manual transmission?

I know many folks run the same oils in both (and all three) holes without issue, but Harley has been back-n-forth on this and lots of old-time mechanics are dead set against running Syn-3 in the tranny. I believe that's why they introduced the Formula+.

I know when I was running Syn3 in all 3 holes I'd get metal fuzzies on the drain plug magnet, with the change to Shockproof Heavy I don't have anything on the drain plug magnet.
