Well here's my question on the 2014 Tri Glide. Is it the 1st 500 miles OR the 1st 1000 miles. ? I last New bike was a 98 Bagger. Now i know I kept that one under 55 for a few days and even on the way home. It was a good hour drive back to my place in the middle of summer. With this southwest SUN & heat. I've kept it down around 55 and mostly city driving. BUT this way its going to take a month to put on 500 miles that's why I'm asking . What have you guys done ? Old rider with a New animal :Dorag: Thanks Rick

I believe it's 500 miles for break in ( check the OM ). I just would get up early in the AM while still cool out and try to ride a hundred miles or so, had it broke in quick.

1st service is at 1000 miles.

:Agree: 1st 1,000 miles its all oils, then every 5,000 miles after that for engine oil and a check list of items. Primary oil is every 10,000 miles and trans is every 20,000 miles. There are some dealers who try and convince a person the engine oil needs changed every 2,500 miles, they're just trying to pry more money out of the customer.

I'm sure you'll get differing opinions on this, Rick, but I followed a different break-in schedule. I changed my oil at 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, and 2500 miles. I used fossil oil. Years ago, I read an article by Donnie Peterson in American Iron recommending this break-in schedule for a new motor. The idea is to get the metal particles out of the oil suspension to minimize wear. Trans and primary fluids were changed at 500 and 2500 miles. Same rationale. I did all the work myself to save costs.

I just go by the book.. If they don't know then nobody does...
First at 1,000 miles, .

2500 would be correct for Dino oil change intervals but supposedly Syn 3 is good ? for 5k. Always remember, oil is cheap, motors are expensive. I got 168k out of an EVO with absolutely no engine work at all by using Castrol GTX 20w50 changed at 2500 miles. Bike had great compression when I traded it in. It still did not smoke or have issues. ran like new. Use correct oil filters too.

Almost as many opinions on oil and oil changes as there are on front tires. Within reason do what makes you comfortable, but oil is cheaper than engines. RIDE SAFE

First 1000 miles then every 5000 miles but if all else fails, do what the book says. Thats proof if needed. ThumbUp

:Agree:Service interval threads are almost like oil threads, IMO I go with the manufactures guidelines, only time I stray is when I know the oil has been abused by very high temperature. If a person really wants to know what their oil is doing they could use someone like Black Stone to analyze it. I did a couple samples on the 2010 Triglide I used to have, never had a bad report at normal service intervals.

Break-in .... I stayed below 3000 rpm for the 1st 500 miles then 3250 for the next 250 miles.
I had a free service at 1000 miles where I went with Syn 3 in Engine, trans, and primary.
I had another free service at 2500 miles where I went with Syn 3 in Engine, Formula+ in Primary, and Bel-Ray 85W-140 in the trans.
5000 mile changes from here on out. Will do the trans every other oil change.

I am VERY HAPPY with the current combo of oils. Shifts quiet and smooth, neutral is a breeze to find, runs great!!!
Currently at 21 weeks of ownership and 6135 miles. :D
