My new to me '22 TG with 1200 miles starting knocking. Could this be caused by lugging the engine too much? I've been keeping it in the 2,000 - 3,000 rpm range. I've just read on this site that 3,000 - 3,500 is ideal. I will definitely change my riding style once dealer has a look. Fortunately there are four months of factory warranty remaining. Thank you for your input.

I never try to open the throttle on anything below 2500 rpms, a slow roll on maybe but downshifting is better in my opinion. My normal shift point is 3000 to 3500, another thought is you got ahold of some lousy gasoline.

Mt 17 with a stage 2 Upgrade has no issue with rolling the throttle on at 2200 or above. I am running a S&S 465 cam, Fullsac head pipe, SE air cleaner, SE mufflers and a full dyno tune using a TTS tuner. This combo makes 102 ft lb of torque at 2200 rpm . It has never knocked or lugged. But as mentioned it could be bad gas.

The M8's can easily take a throttle roll on at 2200 to 2500 RPM. Could be bad gas, could be some carbon build up.
The Twin Cams, I would not do heavy throttle below 2900 RPM, crank shifting was a weakness with them.
In addition to bad gas causing some knocking, could be a plethora of things. Good idea to take it in and see what they say...hopefully they don't tell you "they all do that", because they don't.

I concur

Thank you for your inputs. Started it up the following morning with no discernible knocking. Have been keeping RPMs closer to 3000 with no further knocking.
Appreciate all your thoughts on this matter.

Installed the oil catch can from DK Customs. I have to clean mine about every 1K
That decreased the noise and ping dramatically once the carbon burned off.
Next I used Lucus Octane Boost. Ping is 98% gone. Experiment.

2500 is the lowest I like to be at. Cruising , I like around 3000 rpm. Try some octane boost and see if it helps then you will know if it’s your gas. I got a Power Vision 3 with a tatget tune from Fuelmoto to make my Air fuel ratio a bit richer. It helped
