Interesting Discovery During My Oil Change Today

Thought today would be a good day to change the oil and filters on my 2019 DCT. Didn't want to go 8,000 between changes so thought 5500 might be enough. Got everything finished, including that darn tranny filter which can be a pain and went to pour the old oil in the container I had just used. I hadn't lost any and I know that some will remain in the pan, but when I filled the container I only had a little over 4 Qts. Remember, it takes 4.9 when filters are also changed. This is my 9th Wing and I've never had a wing use oil. No signs at all of oil burning and no leaks

Anyone out that experience anything like that?

Every engine has to use/burn a little oil…without some oil being left on the cylinder walls by the oil rings the compression rings will score the cylinder walls..

5000 miles between oil changes less then a quart usage is not unheard of..

member there is also a certain amount of oil trapped in the filter(s)

This and dont forget the oil filter holds some oil

It is not unusual to use or lose a bit of oil in that many miles, it has to lube the engine

Every manufacture has a spec regaurding what they consider is acceptable oil usage. When I worked for Chrysler/Plymouth in the mid 70's, they considered 1 qt in 800 miles acceptable. Basically, that meant that if a new Chrysler customer looses 1 qt in a 900 mile period, they would not consider it a warrantable condition.
