front tire on trike

You will get a lot of differing opinions and remember, they are just opinions. I have a Michelin Pilot Active. It has 9000 miles on it and it looks like I will get another 12000 to 15000 miles.

Yes, it is reversed. I like the wear on the tire and more importantly, I love the handling.

My tirke is raked 5.5 degrees. I like the tire so much I bought another when it was on sale.

Most folks reverse the tire when it was a tire made for the rear. The way a tire is manufactured, there is a splice that apparently can be over stressed if a rear tire is used in front, but with forward rotation. Someone recently said that a motorcycle school trainer also said a rear tire in front should be reversed because if not, the front tire will throw rain water at the rears, causing hydroplaning. Interesting point. Mine is reversed, and in the rain I have not yet hydroplaned front or rear.

The MPA seems to be the hands down favorite here for the heavy trikes. Mine is a VTX, (much lighter than a Wing) and all I can really say is: "It's a tire."

Nothing wrong with it.

If they ware all marked like the Continentals there wouldn't be too much debate on weather a tire could or couldn't be used and which direction to mount.......

I have the Pilot Activ and it has 16000 miles on it and still going. I do have the rear tire mounted on the front and it is mounted in reverse. Great tire and I would buy another just like it when it comes time to replace it.

Why do you run them mounted backwards

Yes, I agree with the thread splice concept where a rear tire is mounted backwards as not to brake against the tire splice.

However, I have another theory:

A motorcycle tire is designed to displace water off to the sides and not straight to the rear where the rear motorcycle tire is.

However, a trike has two rear wheels exactly in the position where the water is displaced. By reversing the tire designed for the rear wheel the water is not thrown into the two rear wheels.
My $.01.5 (inflation)

I put the MPA on my Valkyrie trike.
The improvement in handling was dramatic.
I have an on ramp I often use,it's a long sweeping right turn.
I really don't have to steer except for a slight right hand pressure, I also lean into the turn.
With the stock tire I had to really use the push pull method..
Only problem is speedo is off about 1 mile in 10,,(10%)
anyone know how to correct that??

Welcome to the wonderful world of Honda,,, THE Yamaha is off too I think they all are it is a given. A yellow box can correct one or the other but not both..... I think most just live with it,, the mileage racking up really sucks...

How did you calculate that 1MPH would = 10 per 100. If you do 100 MPH for 1 hour you will cover 100 miles and with the new tire you will cover the same 100 but it will read 101 So more like 10 per 1,000 miles

The speedometer is read off the transmission/rear end of the bike. What may have changed was when you had the bike changed to a trike. The front tire has no bearing on the speedometer at all.

2 wheel Valks read off the front wheel. No clue if they modify that for a trike.

BINGO!!!!!! MPA is the same size as a std honda front tire, just more BEEF to it!

I have been reading motorcycle blogs for a few years and the concensus seems to concur on just two brands: The Michelin Pro Active and the Bridgestone Battleax (sp?) 45. Both are good. I have the MPA but riders seem to be leaning toward the BP45 which I may try next, but I run Dyna Beads in mine and thus far no cupping.

I am new to the trike world so I hope this isn't too dumb of question. Am I to understand you are running the larger sized rear tire on the front of the 1800? That asked, is there any other things that have to be addressed to prevent rubbing of fender? I do understand the logic of turning it backwards.
Paint work is about done and I hope to have her together soon.

If you run the larger size tire on the front it will rub the fender. You run a rear tire that is the same size tire as the present front tire. Look at the front tire and order the same size only in a rear tire.

Can someone explain what front tire size has to do w/speedo accuracy?
Valk different than my Wing?
