Signiture on posts

Ok, I know where to go and how to do it, but when I put the signature in the space provided then try to add the html or bold, size, font and color it just doesn't work. When I save it then go to a post of mine to see it, it just isn't right. It shows all the html (in the wrong places) but doesn't look like what I created. Tried it several times, tried putting in my own html, nothing worked.
I see others are not having a problem with it, so what is going on?

Are you using conventional HTML? BBS systems are similar to HTML, but there are some differences - like the <html_code> is replaced by [html_code] - "<" replaced by "[", ]" replaced by "]". Syntax similar but not the same. Most BBS sys admins don't allow pure HTML for security reasons - not sure about this one.
