Honda with Champion conversion straight axle....

I just came home from the Honda dealer getting the recall repair on the rear Master cylinder. Stopping before my garage door getting off the bike I see oil all over my rear wheel and dripping onto the ground. Thick deferential oil. Removing the wheel, brake caliber, rotor and the plate which holds the seal in....I though I could just pull the axle out of the housing but it seems like something is holding in...IS there? Must I remover the cover off the deferential and do something in there to remove the axle? Looking for a little help here also does anyone know the oil seal part number or where I can get a replacement...Any help would be deeply appreciated....Zorro

Never mind, I see a definitive reply below. It appears your's uses wheel end retention.

I said "probably" .... etc ...

Sometimes a bad seal is the symptom of a badly worn axle shaft grooved by a bad wheel bearing.

Let's hope it's just a bad seal.

You might check with a poster on the boards whose screen name is Lee H. Mann .... he's a Lehman & Champion dealer / installer.

No do not remove the plate. After you remove the Caliper mount just pull out the axle. You may need a little persuading. The bearing fits tight into the housing. You can x reference the bearing. With and American made one from a local bearing house. You will need to order the Seal Protector or Cage Seal as Champion calls it from them. The seal is Suzuki. Also from bearing house. I got my stuff pressed on and off for $20.00

Drain the differential and refill with only 1 qt of oil. Not to the fill hole. If you look you will understand. The bearing is double sealed. There is no need to drive oil out to the bearing. Only the differential need oiling. If oil is one the outside of the bearing then the bearing grease has been washed out. You must replace the bearing even if it looks good.

Thank you.....I'll put the plate back on and will tap the axle with a plastic dead blow hammer....when I took the back plate off the spring clip which holds the oil seal in had dropped out and was hanging on the axle..ZORRO

The spring clip acts as a spacer. It does move freely when you remove the bolts. Reuse it. Hang on to your wallet. They do have the complete kit. about $60.00 as I remember. the bearing is Chinese you can but for about $7.00 at a bearing shop. $20.00 from Champion. The last picture is what champion calls the cage seal. The real world calls it a seal protector. If you don't destroy the spacers, this is the only part you need to buy from Champion unless you can find somebody to cross reference it. I could not. Suzuki Samurai was too big.. Mabey Tracker. too hard to find and not that expensive. http://www.championsidecars.com/

Thank you for your help I pulled the axle out by removing the plate which holds it in....If I left it on I would pull the bearing off also making it harder to get out. The bearing is shot and several bearing are missing and the oil seals were also destroyed with the axle flopping around.. Feeling the races inside the axle housing I found the races to be thicker of the top than the bottom?? I don't know if this is normal? I have to check the roundness of the races...Getting them out is going to be a job...I was thinking about heating up the outside with a touch to expand it and maybe the races will move then?? ANY Ideas out there in trike land?? on how to get them out?? thanks for the help...zorro

I called champion today and found out mine is a Toyota rear....If the universal joint is bolted to the pinion by 4 bolts and nuts this model is discontinued with no stock on parts not even reference numbers to get replacement parts. Today I went to Auto Zone and brought a bearing crossed reference with the number on the old one. ($24.21) Now I need to find a place to get the bearing off the axle and somehow get the oil seal. Is there two and outside and inside one? and a seal protector......I was told the kit you find on the internet is for a Suzuki....I'll check again.....Thanks for the help deeply appreciated....Zorro
