Pros/Cons 2012 Level I versus 2008 Level II

What are the differences mechanically in the 2012 to the 2008? Is the radio, tranny, cooling system, brakes different? Would I need to stay away from a new trike being built on a 2008 Level II with only 2K miles?

Late 2006-2008:
Level 1: Premium Audio
Level 2: Add Comfort Package, Navigation
Level 3: Add ABS
Level 4: Add Airbag

2012-Present:
Level 1: Premium Audio, TPMS, Comfort Package
Level 2: Add Navigation/Weather/XM/Trip Planner
Level 3: Add ABS
Level 4: Add Airbag

Note: I have a 2008 and it doesn't have heated grips or seats nor the GPS. Gotta say I don't miss heated grips or seats much as it seldom gets cold enough where I live to make much difference. Maybe it does where you are. As far as the GPS, the 2006 was the LAST YEAR of the big sim chip and map versions were frozen so the latest map you can get is about circa 2007 (I am not positive but it ain't up to date). The 2008 and newer GPS will use the small sim chip (not sure what they call these) and you can likely get fresh map updates which are stupid expensive.

Personally, the GPS on the wing isn't much of a temptation for me. Best thing is that it is harder to steal if you are parked outside a restaurant or whatever but worst thing is that replacement and maps are very expensive and it probably doesn't have the performance of an aftermarket motorcycle GPS like the Garmin (which would be easier to swipe if you don't lock it up when you go in someplace).

I bought a stripped 2008 with 5300 miles knowing this; price was great and downsides few. Again, heated seats/grips may be more important to you! Good luck; really can't go wrong either way.

Off the top of my head the only difference in any of the items you mentioned is the 2012 has a USB port in the trunk where you can plug in a memory stick or MP3 Player. The '08 you'd have to feed through the AUX Audio input in the left pocket. 2000 miles on an '08 is almost unheard of. If it checks out mechanically and the price is right that could be the deal of a century.

Are these already converted or just bike you will be getting converted. That might make a difference. There might be a small amount of negative to converting a seven or eight year old bike but if you are planning to keep it then go for it....

The 2012 has been converted by the plant and is still for sale in TX, the 08 is being built now by a trike company. My goal is to have heat, the gps is not required and I like the Zumo 665 to have the xm option.

I agree about the Zumo Karen. Mine is only a 660 but I really like it for trips. Back when I had my '06 with built in GPS I'd zoom the built in up to .5 miles and use it to help me tell how aggressive the curves were. I got caught blind in curves that were tighter then expected so a little heads up was comforting.

I guess it's like I hinted earlier. Newer bike and new conversion is worth more (and will probably cost you more). Is it enough difference to dissuade me away from the '08?? I'd have to see all the particulars to make that decision. If you would feel better on the newer style and want a couple more creature comforts then the '12 is probably the better option. If the updated stuff is just fluff and you trust the dealer doing the '08 and the money is right then I would not hesitate to go that direction. :xszpv::xszpv:

My first was a 2005 W/ ABS. I now have the 2012 Level 3.

Honda lists the changes to the 2012 Honda Goldwing as the following (I added a couple at the bottom):

• Fresh styling cues produce a more integrated appearance along with a sporting edge, adding to the premium touring visage.
• Redesigned fairing adds extra wind protection, especially to the lower body and leg areas.
• Larger saddlebags add approximately 7 liters of additional storage space, upping total capacity to well over 150 liters including the trunk and fairing pockets.
• Handy central storage pocket added to models without airbag. (Great for gun, flashlight, tire gauge etc.)
• Revised suspension settings front and rear yield added compliance for a better ride and more comfort. (While not perfect, It is better than my 2005)
• Urethane seat material and cover material give added comfort. (They reshaped it by removing those side bulges which makes it better for us with shorter inseams)
• Re-shaped taillight adds a distinctive appearance and aids visibility.
• Wheels are now clear-coated for easier cleaning and a great, long-lasting look. (and yes they do stay a lot cleaner)
• Updated instrumentation styling lends a high-performance touch.
• TPMS
• USP port in trunk
• Adding a CB is much easier. Everything is in the trunk (plug and play)
• Next Generation Honda Satellite Linked Navigation System that features a new screen which is larger and brighter. System is fully integrated with 3-D terrain view, lane assist and more. Satellite system also provides voice prompts and pop up menus. (A nice improvement over past years)
