Using ear plug speakers- goldwing 1800 JB headsets.

Perhaps some one can help with where to get leads that allow the use of earplug speakers.

Has anyone ever tried to connect (splice) the required jack into in to the helmet connecting lead. Seem that this could be done if one knew the the correct wires to solder.

If you do not have CB and need the mic function this adapter will work well. I installed a 3.5 mm stereo cut out jack into all of my helmets so I can plug my noise canceling ear buds in and eliminate the helmet speakers. The speakers work fine for me just riding around town but on the highway the wind and road noise nearly obliterates usable helmet speaker audio. Installing the helmet jack is not too difficult but does take some soldering experience and a good iron. :xszpv: :xszpv:

This system seems what I am looking for . Do you have any more detailed info on it. I am capable of doing the work.

My problem is both my wife and I are now suffering from some hearing lose and using ear plugs we have to have the volume on our Goldwing turned up to full. We would like to be able to turn it down to get better quality sound from it.
Like yourself we find high speed travel wind noise interferes with the sound.

Thanks for sending the info. Unfortunately this would not allow the mic to be used as well as the speakers.

I use J & M modular head sets. Don't know if that would have any input at all but thought I'd toss that in. Here is what I did...

1. install head sets per manufacture instructions.

2. install 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) cut out head phone jack. I used RadioShack #274-246. Location will depend on helmet design and your preference. I did have to cut some of the inner padding away allowing room for the jack but it was not vital. Also I used my Dermal Tool with flat bottom grinder bit to reduce the thickness of the helmet shell slightly. This was necessary to get the knurled nut to be place on the shaft. Orient the jack connection terminals so you can get to them for soldering.

3. Cut the individual speaker wires so they can be routed to both the speakers and the original inputs. Connect the two common wires (4 wires) together then to the jack common terminal. Connect the left and right input wires to the jack inputs and the corresponding output wires to the jack output locations. Tuck away and secure all wires. I used some clear silicone sealer to stick the wires so they could not fall where I'd accidentally pull one loose.

Now you are ready to plug in the ear buds of choice. There are a ton of them out there but I've found the lower the profile the better. Some will stick out so far they will be jammed into your ear canal when you put the helmet on. I wish I could remember the model # I have. I know they are Sony. Remember "buy cheap - get cheap". In this case that is most likely true. I paid around $30 for mine and they have good audio quality.

I hope all this helps. I know the ear buds have made a HUGE improvement in riding for me. I like my tunes !!!! :xszpv::xszpv:

That info is just what I needed. Once I have done it I will post.
I am sure it will be very helpful to trike /bike owners.

I did approach J&M but they don't have the leads anyway for my particular model.

Thanks again for your help. This forum is so helpful

Safe riding to all.

Help with identifying lead on J&M headsets.

headset.jpgI have just started to do the rewiring of the J&M headset for ear plug speakers.
Unfortunately I need to know which wires to connect to the phone jack Each speaker has two wires and the phone jack has also got two. Somehow these two wires have to be connect to each speaker lead. Any help would really be appreciated!

It sounds like you picked up the wrong stereo jack. Does the package say #274-246 (go to RadioShack.com and punch in that number to see what the jack looks like)? If so it should actually have five places to solder wires. One is the common ground which all the black wires will go to. One will be right channel in from the head set connector. Another will be right channel out to the speaker. The third will be left channel in and the last one will be left channel out. Look on the package and you will see a diagram of where to put which wire so when the ear bud connector is inserted the audio will go to it and not the speakers.

Hi Gold Rush.

I see now where I have gone wrong . I had the idea you could spice into the speaker wires a simple female stereo jack. Looking at the headset ( photo) I have no idea where I would get all the wires from it you mention . Just doesn't seem enough. I may now shelve the idea until something better comes along.
Thanks ever so much for your help and time. Sorry it didn't work out.
