One Year Since Prostate Cancer

Last March I had a radical prostatectomy, age 66. I had been suffering from BHP for several years, and my PSA was 4.5, my Gleason score was 6. After removal my prostate weighed 39 grams...big sucker...caused me symptoms for years. Was happy to get ride of it and the cancer. Last 2 PSA tests were .002. Doc said that this basically means "cancer free." Praise the Lord and modern medical treatment. Doc said to come back in a year for PSA.

I was able to ride 6 weeks following the surgery, had incontiency for 9 months, now some leakage if I wait too long or strain...but riding presents no issues. All other systems normal. The most agonizing part was the wearing of a catheter for two weeks at home following the surgery.

I am grateful for all the information I gleamed from this board....and especially Donnie and his blog.

Don't forget to keep an eye on that PSA test!

BPH = Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

First sign: getting up 3 or more time a night to urinate.

Glad to hear your in remission.I to am cancer free (lymphoma,brain) coming up on 2 years,sure changes yer life 180 degs,(why I went to trike)
Just be sure you make those Dr's appts , take nothing for granted & enjoy the life god gave youI

Great news and good luck in the future. Nothing like hearing that kind of news from your doctor.
I am prostate cancer free for 6 years and kidney cancer free for 1 1/2 years.
You take care of yourself with many happy years and miles, ride safe

Glad to hear your situation went well. Now, I too have an enlarged prostate with having to get 2,3,4 times a night. I do not have cancer, but this is getting old!!! I have avoided any operation up to this point because of the after effects, BUT I am open to hearing your take on it. Would you recommend an operation with all the "stuff" a guys has to deal with afterwards?? Thanks for you opinion.

Here's the deal: used da Vinci robotic nerve sparing procedure...all is as good as ever. I had ED for close to a year. Used a small pad for 9 months...but no big deal...I was having some leakage before surgery due to the enlarged prostate. I was so happy to get rid of the blasted thing. Now I get up once during the night.

One thing they don't tell you is that they have to sever the urethra and then reattach, thus your member shrinks a tad

It sure beats having cancer roaming around. I would do it again.

BTW they have found that if one uses Aovdart for BPH it may increase the likelihood of developing prostate cancer...I used Avodart, etc. for 5-6 years.

thanks for the reply and info, but I much as I try, being dyslectic still strikes. As you can see from my partial quote of your first comment, I saw the BHP, but typed BPH.:gah: The BHP is why I asked my question, but I still wouldn't have known what BPH was.

Glad to hear you're doing well. Prostate cancer can be rough. Next month will be ten years of remission for me. I suffered with it from 2002-05.
(Will be 62 in Nov)
