Enabled Trikers: Welcome to our newest forum!

Zook great new forum!! The saying, "It takes one, to know one" is very appropriate with this subject!

Paul just got on and immediately ok'd your request. It is really nice to get a friend request!

It's amazing what we do to keep riding. Today I'm paying for yesterday but it was well worth it and an honor (Rode up to Prescott to Stand the Flag line for the families of our fallen Granite Mountain Hotshots)!! Hope everyone stays safe in the wind!

I guess there is no accounting for phantom pain.
It's just weird stuff to live with!

What kind of trike are you riding and what have you done to it to accommodate your handicap?

Post some pictures and do a little bragging!

:10:ThumbUp

I just finished giving my old trailer an overhaul and face lift.
I went ahead and rewired with all new wiring and new tires and painted to match the trike.
I have had the trailer for 31 years and it was really in need of some attention!

Paul, it looks like you have given that old trailer a new lease on life.
Just like some of us old pharts, with a little help , we are good to go
several more miles.

I wish i could knock a few years off myself that way?

Its nuts when your trike is the most attractive feature about yourself!
Maybe i could paint it John Deer green and attract some redneck chicks?
The wife would probably just laugh at my antics? ( no fool like an old fool?)
Hah-Hah!
It's fun gettin old, You can build a trike and make all the young bucks jealous anyhow!

I am havin fun with this trike! And i can play with it every day. So eat your heart out young bucks!

pepper Hi All

Thank you for starting this thread. My husband introduced me to motorcycle travel 7 years ago and I'm addicted! I started to get my motorcycle licence (we have a 3 stage licencing process in Ontario) but I had to let it lapse when I suffered a spinal cord injury a year and a half ago.

Recovery is going well but I still don't have full feeling in my lower body (I can walk but I wobble without alcohol lol). I've decided to get myself a trike - life's too short let your passions pass you by! I will be converting a HD Ultra but I'm not sure what brand to go with.

I like the thought of the independent suspension (and the look of) the Daytona from California Sidecar, but I'm wondering what is "safer" - the CSC independent suspension or the rigid swing-arm of Lehman's Renegade? As a new rider, both will probably be "equal" in learning curve, but I'm thinking that the least amount of jarring of my spine would be best.

We typically do not ride interstates when we travel - mostly secondary highways and country roads. Can anyone help give me some guidance on the direction I should be looking?

Welcome Hunnee:

I am not familiar with either the csc or the leman rigid swing arm.
I am sure there are others that will give you better insight in that respect.

I have a straight axle on the 1989 Harley ultra i converted.
I'm just thinking that with your back problems, anything with the word rigid in it brings back my misspent youth with rigid frame choppers and i would be real leary?
Just sayin?

I don't have a problem with the ride on my champion conversion but any trike will be a little rough in town and be a whole different critter on the road.
I believe an independant suspension would be better for you in that respect.
The independent suspensions i have ridden don't seem to have as much tendency to feel like you are overcoming G forces in a turn which may cause you less back strain?

One thing i will tell you is that you should get with Bazooka, (forum administrator) to discuss how much you should rake the front end for ease of steering. Steering will affect your back and a hard to steer or wobbly front end end is no fun at all!
Also he sells a nice rake kit to forum members at about half the cost that others will charge.
I can vouch for its quality as i installed it on my conversion.

A word of caution?
I did my own build and so was able to control quality,Your trike is only as good as the person that builds it.
Don't settle for the first one that comes along without really outstanding references.

Also thats a question you can throw out to forum members for a "TRIKE" mechanic in your area?

Welcome, Hunnee! :wave4: I chose a CSC conversion based on the installer, which was my local HD dealer. I had done business with them for over 25 years and trusted them (I still do, too!) to do a good job. I'm really pleased with the result, and I think you would be happy with any of the major conversions. I think the IRS would be a better option for you, in light of your physical situation. Good luck with your search, and ask questions!

Fantastic to finally see a forum that contains a section for the challenged triker! I have been designing wheelchair accessible trikes for the brotherhood that are confined to wheelchairs for life and still want to feel the wind in there hair. I had to retire several years ago when it became to difficult to travel. But i will still help anyone who wishes to get back on the road again in any way I can. just give me a call or shoot me an email and we somehow get together.
this is an excellent forum and this section is now my favorite! Keep up the great work!!

ThumbUp Glacier Park Montana, Here I come!

As folks make Sturgis their destination next week, I am heading the other way from Wyoming into Northern Montana.
I've been to Sturgis plenty of times.
:Shrug:The whole purpose of going was to try and hit a new low every year and i can no longer do that. I doubt they will even miss me standing on the corner wearing jeans and a black T-shirt?

I Ran the Highway to the sun 24 yrs ago when my tour Glide was new and i always wanted to go back. Now, it has been on my bucket list since i got sick.

I haven't decided whether or not i will cross over into Canada?
I seen relatives there last April.

This time i am taking my old Glide back as a trike!
I have had friends say they wanted to go but they have all backed out, and a dear friend that was still going with me can now only attend in spirit?
So, i am going alone!

ThumbUp I am planning to camp as much as possible but will have to land somewhere where i can have access to electricity every now again to charge the batteries on my oxygen machine.
I am planning to pack my fly rod even though its tough to stand in the water and fish now.

It seems lately my breathing has been getting a might harder but my heart seems to be working well enough!

:gah:I have to wait until after tuesday because i need to attend the funeral of my good friend and riding buddy jim, who passed on two days ago of the same insidious thing thats trying to get me.
I guess this will be a memorial trip for jim as well. I sure wish he were going with me, :Shrug:but i guess God has another road for him to ride now?

:Crap:Jim didn't get to complete his bucket list of rides so i guess it's up to me now?

 So if you see some worn out old cowboy on a Black Harley tour Glide trike and pulling a small Black trailer behind running through Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Canada, with the spirit of an old friend and his trike beside me?
honk and wave ok?

Paul I wish you the best of luck and health on your trip !!!I think that's a good thing your doing , it's happening to me way to often lately and true friends are to hard to come by .

One thing it will allow you to clear the noggin and just think about all the good times you guys had , so again I say good luck and take care .:10::10:

A few years ago I camped at the St. Mary campground. The vistas were amazing. I even hiked the Iceberg Lake Trail. I'd like to go back but my next camping adventure is going to be Crater Lake National Park.

Parkinson's Disease. Going on 15 yrs. since diagnosed and never been happier. I may not be able to do what I used to at the speed I used to. My Trike has given me the freedom I crave. I have put more miles on in 3 months with the Trike than I had in the last three years with my Nightster. Just my two cents worth.

WOW ! after reading all this, THERE IS HOPE! wrecked my bike and am now a AKA and intend on riding again and this forum gives me great hope. i hope i won't be bothering you guys to much as this is all new to me. never rode a trike before but am looking forward to it with all it's storage. my accident has been a real eye opener for me. been riding for 47 years and want to keep going and a trike looks like the ticket. thanks for all your insight and posts.

I just read this from start to finish. I really enjoyed reading everyone's stories. And that build by pcombe was cool to see. Enjoyed the photos immensely! My own situation isn't as serious as what many of you are dealing with. I wrecked my 2-wheeler in 1979 broke femur and got a rebuilt hip. Had that hip totally reworked in March-2014 and it failed, pulled away from pelvis.

So, had that same hip totally redone in September, this latest one has a half-dozen screws, straps and probably some JBWeld for extra hold. I told the (new)doc that this one better stay put. Anyway, I'm getting close to riding condition again. I'm hoping this last set of tie rods and ball joints get me thru this life! I'd really rather not do this again. LOL Again, really enjoyed this read. You guys are inspiring and I'm so glad to see y'all riding. Miles and smiles to you all. ThumbUp

The JB weld should be just the ticket my friend.

There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are no old, bold bikers so get your wheels under you, Challenge the status quo who say you can't and set out to prove em wrong.

It may hurt for a bit but you will find ways to make it bearable until old muscles and joints adapt, just like any activity start slow and build up to your particular comfort, It's not a race.
It took me time and I have to start anew every spring but I can run 600 mile days when im pressed. I usually try to keep it to about 450. Im retired so I don't really have to be anywhere.

There is a learning curve when you start with a trike it's a different animal, there are technics that will reduce fatigue and you can ask folks here for tips.
My old Tour Glide ultra just turned 26 yrs. old and I still love it!

Thought I would jump start this thread as I have lost contact with allot of you and we should keep it open to encourage others. What do you say?

Hi all,
I'm shopping for a bike atm but I want a bike that still leans etc without letting me fall off or requires me to put feet down.

I started out about 7 years ago with Fibromyalgia, Myofascial pain syndrome, most of the whole spectrum disorder syndrome as it is otherwise known and Chronic Fatigue, took me 3 years to get back out of bed. Then a couple of years ago got diagnosed with Polyarthralgia which is just a fancy way of literally saying "many" so I have Rheumatoid, Osteo and the kicker was advanced enthesopathy as well. All the while trying to balance meds and lifestyle and had my first surgerylast year, fusing C5-C7 with disc replacements etc.

So yeah I want no lateral forces so I want a multiwheel bike of any kind that I can register that leans that isn't a scooter because I have a certain amount of expectation of riding.

Ive searched the site here but I didn't find anything with the search engine, I dont seem to have any luck with them on any forum- lol.

If anyone knows of something let me know but I am out there actively looking and speaking to companies now.

I have got special dispensation from my state roads authority to build a Quadricycle of the road qoing kind rather than an ag or sports on with road tyres after all 4 wheels do balance better than 3. For buying there are a few other companies that have leaning bikes, but only the scooters seem to have the longevity the others are one model "fly by nighters" who disappear after 6 months operation.

I have found Tilting works and Tremoto who both have been at it for a while and although not hugely successful in sales yet are dedicated guys who have been at it for years. So I guess they will remain in my box for the moment and I'll take any advice the board can give me.

Cheers all

Gavin

Gavin,

Take a look at a reverse trike made by an outfit named "DiamondBack Division".

They make a leaning reverse trike using pretty much any motorcycle.drive train you want.

My story

In '78 I have was taken off my bike head on by a drunk driver. Other than a totaled bike, I considered myself lucky as per the police report, I landed 150 ft from my bike. I sustained a fractured ankle, solid bruise on entire left side of my body and an amputeted left arm.
I have always wanted to get back on but knew I couldn't fix normally. With more and more trike showing up, I started looking at riding again.
I have found what looks like the frame from a racing sidecar from the nineties with the car attached. Would be a project but original as. Will post if I can get it.
